Luke 13:31-35 (NIV):
At that time, some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.” He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Evening Meditation
As you prepare to close out your day, the words of Jesus in Luke 13:31-35 invite us into a moment of deep reflection. Jesus, fully aware of the danger that awaited Him, remained resolute in His mission. He did not shy away from His path, even when warned of Herod’s murderous intent. Instead, He responded with unwavering determination, declaring that He would continue His work of healing and deliverance until His mission was complete. This passage reminds us that Jesus was not just a teacher or a healer; He was a Savior on a divine mission, one that would ultimately lead to the cross. As you contemplate these words tonight, consider the courage and steadfastness of Jesus. Reflect on the fact that He knew the pain and suffering that awaited Him, yet He chose to press on for the sake of humanity. How does this example challenge you in your own life? Are there areas where you need to be more courageous or resolute in following God’s calling, despite the challenges or fears you may face?
Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem is equally poignant. His longing to gather the people of Jerusalem under His wings like a hen gathers her chicks speaks to the depth of His love and care. Yet, this love was met with resistance and rejection. Tonight, as you prepare to rest, allow yourself to be gathered under the wings of Jesus. Consider the ways in which you may have resisted His love or guidance, and take this moment to surrender those areas to Him. Imagine the peace and protection that comes from being under His wings, knowing that He longs to shelter and care for you. Let this image be your comfort as you drift into sleep, resting in the knowledge that you are deeply loved by a Savior who is willing to face death to bring you life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I come before You this evening, I am reminded of the incredible courage and love of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Father, I thank You for the unwavering determination that Jesus showed in the face of danger. He knew the path ahead would be filled with pain and suffering, yet He chose to walk it for the sake of my salvation. Father, as I reflect on His example, I ask for the same strength and courage in my own life. Help me to face the challenges before me with faith, trusting that You are with me every step of the way. Forgive me for the times when I have allowed fear or doubt to keep me from fully following Your will. Tonight, I surrender those fears to You, knowing that in Your hands, I am safe and secure.
Lord Jesus, as I think about Your lament over Jerusalem, I am struck by the depth of Your love for us. You longed to gather the people under Your wings, to protect and guide them, yet they turned away. I realize that there have been times in my own life when I have resisted Your love, choosing my own way instead of Yours. Jesus, tonight I want to surrender to Your love. Gather me under Your wings, shelter me with Your peace, and guide me in Your truth. I am so grateful that You never give up on me, even when I am stubborn or resistant. Your love is steadfast, and for that, I am eternally thankful. Help me to rest in that love tonight, letting go of all worries and fears, trusting that You are in control.
Holy Spirit, I invite You into my heart this evening. Soften any areas of resistance within me and open my eyes to the ways You are working in my life. I know that I cannot change on my own; I need Your power to transform me from the inside out. Fill me with Your peace tonight, so that I may rest deeply in the assurance of Your presence. As I sleep, speak to my heart, reminding me of Your love and guidance. Help me to wake up tomorrow with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to follow wherever You lead. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for being my constant companion, my comforter, and my guide. I rest in You tonight, knowing that You are with me always.
