Embracing Our Unique Relationship with God
One of the most amazing truths about being human is that we’re unique among all of God’s creation because we have the capacity to relate to Him on a personal level. Think about that for a minute. We’re not like the trees, the birds, or even the most intelligent animals. God gave us something that sets us apart: the ability to know Him, speak to Him, and be in relationship with Him. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Being made in the image of God means that we have the ability to connect with Him in ways that the rest of creation cannot. We’re not just physical beings—we’re spiritual beings with the unique privilege of knowing our Creator.
This truth has profound implications for how we live our daily lives. If we are created to have a relationship with God, then everything else in our lives—our work, our relationships, our goals—should flow out of that connection. The challenge for us is to make that relationship a priority. How often do we go through the motions of life, treating God like an afterthought, when He is the very reason we exist? The prophet Isaiah reminds us in Isaiah 43:7 that we were created for God’s glory: “Everyone who is called by My name, whom I created for My glory, whom I formed and made.” That’s not just a nice thought—that’s our purpose. We weren’t made to just get through life, we were made to glorify God by living in close communion with Him.
But let’s be real for a moment. How many of us struggle to live out that relationship on a daily basis? We get distracted. We get busy. Life throws us curveballs, and before we know it, our connection with God feels distant. But here’s the thing: God hasn’t moved. He’s still there, waiting for us to turn our attention back to Him. James 4:8 promises, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” That’s a promise we can stand on! If we take the time to seek Him, He’s right there, ready to meet with us. It’s not about earning His love or doing enough to deserve a relationship with Him. It’s simply about being present and willing to engage with the God who already loves us deeply.
So, what does it look like to nurture that personal relationship with God? It starts with intentionality. Like any relationship, you have to spend time together. That means setting aside moments throughout your day to talk with Him, to listen to Him, and to meditate on His Word. For me, I find that when I start my day with God—whether it’s through prayer, reading scripture, or even just sitting quietly in His presence—it sets the tone for everything else. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” There’s something incredibly grounding about simply being still and remembering who He is, and that we have the privilege of knowing Him.
The beautiful part is that God desires this relationship even more than we do. He longs to walk with us through every part of our lives, not just the “spiritual” moments. He cares about our struggles, our joys, and our mundane routines. That’s the power of having a personal relationship with God—He’s not distant or uninterested; He’s right there in the details, ready to guide us, comfort us, and remind us of His presence. As Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” We are known by God, and in turn, we have the incredible opportunity to know Him.
