From Surviving to Thriving

Living Out Your Purpose in Christ

Have you ever had one of those days when you’re just trying to make it to the end? We’ve all been there, caught in the grind, overwhelmed by the responsibilities and pressures of life. Sometimes, it feels like we’re simply surviving—just going through the motions, waiting for the day to end so we can start it all over again tomorrow. But here’s the thing: God didn’t create us to merely survive. We were made to thrive, to live with purpose, and to grow in a deep, life-giving relationship with our Creator.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of survival mode, especially in a world that glorifies busyness and equates productivity with worth. But when we stop and remember that God is the one who breathes life into us, we begin to see that there’s more to this life than just getting through it. In John 10:10, Jesus says, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” That’s a promise! Abundant life doesn’t mean a life without struggles or challenges, but it does mean a life filled with purpose, peace, and growth—no matter the circumstances. God created us for more than just getting by; He created us to flourish in His presence, to know Him, and to be known by Him.

The idea of thriving in our relationship with God is woven throughout Scripture. Look at the life of David, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). He wasn’t without his share of struggles—far from it. He faced enemies, betrayal, and personal failure, but in the midst of all of that, David thrived because his heart was aligned with God. Psalm 1 gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to thrive: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:3). Notice that the tree isn’t spared from the changing seasons, but because its roots are deeply nourished by the water, it continues to grow and bear fruit. That’s the kind of thriving God invites us into—a rootedness in Him that sustains us through the ups and downs of life.

So how do we move from just surviving to thriving? It begins with shifting our perspective. Thriving isn’t about achieving more or being busier; it’s about being intentional in our relationship with God. It’s about slowing down enough to recognize His presence in our daily lives and trusting Him with our struggles and joys. When we align our lives with His purpose, everything changes. It’s not that our problems magically disappear, but we begin to see them in light of God’s greater plan for us. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” That strength isn’t just for surviving; it’s for thriving in the calling God has placed on our lives. He equips us for every season, not just to make it through but to grow and bear fruit.

One of the biggest obstacles to thriving is fear—fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of not measuring up. But 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” The truth is, we have everything we need to thrive because God’s Spirit is living in us. We don’t have to be perfect, we just have to be willing to trust God with our lives and take steps of faith. Thriving doesn’t mean never facing challenges; it means leaning into God’s strength when we do.

So, here’s my challenge for you today: Don’t settle for merely surviving. Look at your life and ask yourself, “Where am I just getting by?” Then take that area to God in prayer and ask Him to help you thrive there. Maybe it’s your relationship with Him that feels dry, or maybe it’s a struggle in your job or family life. Whatever it is, trust that God has more for you than just going through the motions. He’s calling you to live abundantly, to thrive in the purpose and relationship He’s created for you.

As you go about your day, keep this in mind: You weren’t made to survive each day; you were made to thrive in a relationship with your Creator. Let that truth sink in, and let it motivate you to live with intention, rooted in the love and purpose of God. He’s with you in every moment, not just to help you make it through, but to help you grow, flourish, and bear fruit in every season.
