And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

This image of persistence is not just about human tenacity; it’s about trust in a God who is just and loving. Jesus assures us that if even an unjust judge can be moved by continual pleading, how much more will our righteous Father respond to His children who cry out to Him. This passage reminds us that, though God’s timing is not always immediate, He hears us, and His justice is certain. We may feel like we are waiting in silence, but God is never far. His answer is always perfect, even if it doesn’t come when we expect.
As we lay down to rest, this passage invites us to contemplate the role of faith in our lives. Jesus ends the parable with a question that lingers: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” The faith Jesus speaks of is not just a momentary belief but a steadfast trust that endures through trials, waiting, and unanswered questions. The widow’s persistence is a picture of this kind of faith—a faith that holds on, even when the answers seem delayed, a faith that continues to pray, trusting that God will act in His time. Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I come before You tonight, I thank You for being a just and loving God, unlike the unjust judge in the parable. You do not turn a deaf ear to Your children, but You hear every cry, every whispered prayer, every plea that rises from our hearts. I confess that there are times when I grow weary in prayer, when I am tempted to lose heart because the answers seem far off. But tonight, I choose to trust You anew. I place my needs, my worries, and my hopes in Your hands, knowing that You are working all things for good, even when I cannot see it. Lord, strengthen my heart to keep praying, to keep seeking, and to remain persistent, not because I doubt Your goodness, but because I trust in Your perfect timing. Let me rest tonight, fully confident in Your justice and Your care for me.
Jesus, my Savior, You are the one who taught us this parable of persistent faith, and You are also the one who lived it out in Your own life. How often did You retreat to pray, to seek the Father’s will, even when the path led You to the cross? Teach me to pray as You did, with a heart that is fully surrendered to the Father’s plan. Forgive me, Lord, for the times when I have grown impatient, for the moments when I have doubted that the Father hears me. Help me to trust in the same way You did, knowing that the Father’s will is always for my good. Tonight, I ask for Your presence to fill my heart with peace, that I might rest knowing that You are my advocate, always interceding for me before the throne of God.
Holy Spirit, You are the one who sustains me in prayer when my strength fails, the one who intercedes with groanings too deep for words when I do not know how to pray. I ask for Your guidance tonight as I seek to deepen my faith. Help me to persevere in prayer, not out of a sense of obligation, but out of a desire to draw closer to the Father. Fill me with the assurance that every prayer I offer is heard, even when the answers seem delayed. Let Your presence bring comfort and rest to my soul as I sleep, knowing that You are at work in ways I cannot see.
