Matthew 21:18-22
“In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, ‘May you never bear fruit again!’ And immediately the fig tree withered up. The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, ‘How did the fig tree wither so quickly?’ Then Jesus told them, ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” and it will happen. You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.’”

In this powerful morning scene, Jesus, hungry and expectant, approaches a leafy fig tree only to find it fruitless. His immediate response—a curse on the tree—causes it to wither instantly, shocking the disciples and inspiring deep reflection. Here, the fig tree represents not just any tree, but the spiritual state of people or communities that might appear fruitful outwardly yet lack the depth of genuine faith. This encounter holds a message for each of us: Are we, like the fig tree, producing only the appearance of spiritual growth, or are we truly bearing fruit that nourishes others and ourselves? When Jesus tells the disciples that faith can move mountains, He emphasizes that true spiritual productivity and divine power stem from authentic, doubt-free belief. We are reminded that our faith’s depth and sincerity are far more valuable than appearances.
In contemplating this scene, we recognize a two-fold challenge: first, to examine our own lives for areas where we might be showing “leaves” but bearing little fruit, and second, to grow in faith, allowing God to manifest His power through us. Jesus’ message to His disciples goes beyond the miracle they witnessed. He wants them—and us—to understand that faith, when fully trusted, becomes a powerful agent for change. As we start this day, we’re invited to seek genuine faith that withstands the hunger of life’s challenges and reflects a life rooted in divine truth and purpose. This faith calls us not just to look productive, but to be productive, allowing God to shape our hearts and actions into something transformative for His kingdom.

Heavenly Father,
As the day begins, I come before You with a heart seeking authenticity and depth in my faith. Just as Jesus examined the fig tree, I ask You to look into my life and reveal areas where I might appear fruitful but lack the spiritual depth You desire. Cleanse me of superficiality and guide me toward a genuine relationship with You that bears fruit even in seasons of difficulty. I thank You for Your grace, which empowers me to start each day anew. Grant me the wisdom to walk with humility, knowing that You are the true source of my strength. Let my actions reflect a love that goes beyond appearances, and may every choice I make today honor You and reflect Your love and holiness.
Lord Jesus,
You taught us through Your actions that true faith comes not through outward signs but from a heart surrendered to the will of God.
