As His Day Begins

John 12:20-26 (ESV): “Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.’”

This passage invites us into a profound moment in Jesus’ ministry, where He responds to the request of some Greeks to see Him with a statement that marks a turning point in His mission. As Jesus speaks of a grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying, He reveals the necessity of sacrifice for the sake of greater fruitfulness. His own impending death is portrayed not as a defeat but as the necessary prelude to a harvest of eternal life. The metaphor of the grain of wheat is rich in meaning, suggesting that true life and purpose are found not in self-preservation but in surrender to God’s will. The Greeks’ desire to see Jesus is met with an unexpected teaching on dying to self, a message that challenges the way we often seek to live our lives, clinging to what is familiar and comfortable.

Yet, the call is clear: to follow Jesus means walking the path of self-denial, embracing a willingness to let go for the sake of God’s glory.

This call to follow Jesus by laying down our lives echoes throughout the generations, speaking directly to the hearts of believers today. In a culture that often prioritizes self-promotion and personal gain, Jesus’ words turn our values upside down. He challenges us to reconsider what it means to “love” our lives—reminding us that true love for life is found in a willingness to lay it down for others. This is a radical form of discipleship that redefines success as faithfulness to God’s purposes, no matter the cost. It is a call to embrace the cross daily, knowing that in our surrender, we find a deeper communion with Christ and a promise that the Father Himself will honor us. For those of us who seek to follow Jesus, the image of the grain of wheat invites us to trust that even when we feel buried or unseen, God is at work, producing a harvest beyond our understanding.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, as I stand at the beginning of this day, I am reminded of the words of Your Son, who spoke of the grain of wheat falling into the earth to die so that it might bear fruit. Father, teach me what it means to lay down my own desires, to release the grip I hold on my life, trusting that in surrender, Your greater purpose unfolds. Help me to see beyond my own limited perspective, recognizing that You are always working, even when the path feels difficult or uncertain. May my heart be aligned with Your will today, so that in every moment, I reflect Your love and grace to those around me. Grant me the courage to embrace the path of humility, knowing that true life is found not in grasping for control but in offering myself fully to You.

Lord Jesus, You spoke of being glorified through Your own sacrifice, and I marvel at the depth of Your love—a love that led You to the cross so that we might live. Teach me, Jesus, to follow You more closely, to walk the path You have set before me with confidence in Your guiding presence. You have shown us that greatness in Your Kingdom is not found in power but in service, not in self-preservation but in self-giving. As I navigate the challenges and opportunities of this day, help me to serve others with the same heart that You demonstrated, willing to lay down my life for the sake of those You place in my path. Let Your example be my guide, and may my life bring glory to the Father through obedience to Your call.

Holy Spirit, breathe Your life into my heart today, that I may walk in the newness of life You have given me through Christ. I know that it is only by Your power that I can truly live out the call to be a servant, to let go of my own ambitions, and to seek the honor that comes from God alone. Holy Spirit, transform my thoughts and desires, molding me into the image of Christ, who willingly became the grain of wheat that died to bring forth a harvest. Strengthen my resolve to face whatever challenges come my way, with a spirit that trusts in Your leading. Let Your peace rule in my heart, so that in all things, I rest in the assurance that You are with me, guiding me toward the fullness of life that God has promised.

Thought for the Day: “Today, let the image of the grain of wheat remind you that true growth in Christ comes through surrender. In laying down our own will, we find the life that God has prepared for us. Trust that in every moment of surrender, He is working out a harvest far greater than we can imagine.”
