Matthew 21:18-22
“In the morning, as Jesus was returning to Jerusalem, he was hungry, and he noticed a fig tree beside the road. He went over to see if there were any figs, but there were only leaves. Then he said to it, ‘May you never bear fruit again!’ And immediately the fig tree withered up. The disciples were amazed when they saw this and asked, ‘How did the fig tree wither so quickly?’ Then Jesus told them, ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” and it will happen. You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.’”
Evening Meditation
As the day comes to a close, this scene from Matthew 21:18-22 offers us a chance to reflect on the nature of true faith. In this passage, Jesus’ interaction with the fig tree and His subsequent teaching challenge us to examine our own faith and the fruit it bears. The fig tree looked healthy from a distance, with leaves that hinted at fruit, but upon closer inspection, it was barren. In the same way, we may sometimes find ourselves looking “leafy” on the outside—going through motions, showing up at church, saying the right things—yet lacking the real fruit that comes from a deeply rooted faith. Jesus’ response to the fig tree is a powerful reminder that He seeks genuine transformation in us, not just outward appearances. As we contemplate this, we’re invited to ask ourselves: is our faith alive and growing, or is it merely for show?
In this evening meditation, the words of Jesus echo a call to faith that doesn’t settle for the superficial but seeks the depth and assurance of a life wholly entrusted to God. Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that true faith can move mountains, highlighting the boundless potential when our hearts are fully aligned with God’s power and purposes. This mountain-moving faith is less about external miracles and more about the inner strength to overcome obstacles that seem insurmountable—be they fears, doubts, or struggles. Tonight, we’re encouraged to let go of superficial faith and cultivate a relationship with God that is deeply rooted, vibrant, and fruitful. Reflect on the places in your life where faith may be struggling, and invite God to breathe new life and purpose into those areas. A faith that bears fruit is one that rests confidently in God’s promises, allowing Him to move in our lives with His transforming power.
Evening Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As I settle into the quiet of this evening, I come before You, humbled by the reminder of the fig tree. I know there are times when I may appear to have faith, yet struggle to bear the fruit You desire. Search my heart, Father, and reveal any areas where my faith has become shallow or routine. Teach me to seek a deeper connection with You, one that goes beyond appearances and reaches into the core of my being. Tonight, I ask for the grace to trust You fully, to let go of any need to “look the part” and instead seek a faith that is genuine and growing. Thank You for Your patience with me and for guiding me toward a faith that truly honors You. In Your loving presence, I find peace, and in Your promises, I find the strength to live a life that reflects Your love and truth.
Lord Jesus,
I am reminded tonight of Your words to the disciples, that if we have faith and do not doubt, we can move mountains. This promise humbles and inspires me, Lord. Help me to trust You fully, to believe in Your power and not in my limitations. I know there are mountains in my life—challenges that feel impossible to overcome. Tonight, I bring these before You, asking for the courage to face them with unwavering faith. Thank You for being my Savior and my Guide, for showing me through Your life and words what it means to live with true faith. I want my life to be fruitful, a testament to Your love and power at work in me. Teach me to live out this faith daily, letting it shape my actions, my words, and my heart. May my life bear the fruit that reflects Your presence in every way.
Holy Spirit,
In the stillness of this night, I invite You to fill my heart with Your peace and strength. Breathe life into the areas where I feel weary or weak. Help me to grow a faith that is rich and enduring, one that can stand firm against life’s storms. I ask for Your guidance, Holy Spirit, to lead me in truth and to transform my doubts into trust. When I am tempted to rely on appearances, remind me that You desire a heart that seeks God above all else. Thank You for walking with me, for being my Comforter and Counselor. As I close my eyes tonight, may Your presence surround me, filling me with hope and courage for the day to come. Let my life reflect the faith that pleases God, one that is alive and active, bearing fruit that glorifies His name.
Thought for the Night
As you close this day, remember that true faith goes beyond appearances; it’s a trust that can move mountains. Rest in God’s promise that a life rooted in Him will always bear fruit in due season.
