As the Day Ends

Reflecting on Matthew 24:26-28

“So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.” (Matthew 24:26-28, ESV)

As the day ends, this passage from Matthew offers a profound opportunity to reflect on the certainty of Christ’s return and the assurance it brings. Jesus warns His disciples against being misled by claims of His presence in secret or distant places. His return will be unmistakable, like lightning streaking across the entire sky. It’s a beautiful reminder that we don’t have to chase after rumors or worry that we’ve missed something. The coming of the Son of Man will be a global, undeniable event. This truth invites us to rest in God’s promises, knowing that His plans are secure and His timing is perfect.

The final imagery in this passage—the vultures gathering where there is a corpse—might seem jarring, but it underscores the inevitability of judgment. Just as nature operates with unshakable certainty, so too does God’s justice. For believers, this is not a cause for fear but a call to remain steadfast in faith, trusting that Christ’s return will bring the restoration of all things. As you close your day, let this passage anchor your thoughts in the hope of Christ’s promise and the comfort of His sovereignty. Whether you’ve faced triumphs or trials today, His ultimate victory reminds us that every struggle will be redeemed and every wrong set right.

Evening Prayer

Heavenly Father,
As the night settles, I come before You with gratitude and humility. Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and tonight, the reminder of Christ’s promised return fills me with awe and peace. Thank You for the assurance that Your plans are unshakable, that no power on earth or in heaven can disrupt what You have ordained. I confess that I am often tempted to worry, to look for signs or solutions in the wrong places. But Your Word reminds me that Your ways are higher than mine and that Your timing is perfect. Teach me, Father, to trust You fully, even in the waiting. Help me rest tonight, knowing that You hold all of creation in Your hands. Let the peace of Your sovereignty calm my restless thoughts and prepare me to wake with renewed faith in Your promises.

Lord Jesus,
You are the bright and morning star, the One who will return in glory and power. I thank You for the promise that Your coming will be like lightning, unmistakable and awe-inspiring. In a world filled with distractions and false claims, help me fix my eyes on You. Forgive me for the times I have sought security in things other than You, and guide my heart back to the truth of Your Word. Tonight, I rest in the hope of Your return, knowing that Your light will one day pierce through every shadow of darkness. Fill my heart with the anticipation of that glorious day, and let that hope shape the way I live and love. Guard my dreams, Lord, and fill them with the reassurance of Your presence, that I might wake with a heart ready to serve You.

Holy Spirit,
You are my Comforter and Guide, the One who leads me into all truth. Tonight, I ask You to quiet my mind and center my thoughts on the promises of God. Remind me that the coming of the Son of Man is not something to fear but something to eagerly await. Teach me to live in readiness, not through anxiety, but through trust and obedience. As I prepare to sleep, let Your presence fill this room, surrounding me with peace that surpasses all understanding. Strengthen my faith to stand firm in the days to come, and help me bear witness to the hope I have in Christ. Fill my heart with a deep sense of Your love, and let that love overflow into my interactions tomorrow. Keep me grounded in Your truth, and may Your guidance lead me in all things.
