“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. Come now; let us leave.”
Meditation on John 14:28-31
In this passage from the Gospel of John, we witness a powerful moment where Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure, yet He does so with a tone of assurance and calm. These words were spoken in the shadow of His impending crucifixion, but instead of fear, Jesus exudes a profound peace and purpose. He speaks of His return to the Father, not as a moment of sorrow, but as a reason for joy. This is because His departure signals the completion of His mission on Earth and the beginning of a new relationship between believers and the Father, made possible through His sacrifice. The idea that “the Father is greater than I” may initially seem puzzling, but it speaks to the unity of the Father and the Son in their divine purpose. Even in His submission to the Father’s will, Jesus reveals the depth of His love for His Father, which ultimately leads to our salvation.
For the disciples, this statement is not just a prediction but an invitation to believe. Jesus was preparing them to see that His actions were not just the result of circumstance, but the result of love and obedience to the Father. As Jesus speaks of the prince of this world, He is acknowledging the spiritual battle ahead, yet He reassures them that Satan has no power over Him. It is as though He is saying, “What is to come must happen, but it will not deter the plan of God.” This is a comfort for us today, as we face our own battles in life. We can take courage in knowing that, like Jesus, we are not left alone, and no matter what comes against us, God’s plan will prevail. Jesus’ ultimate act of obedience to the Father becomes the model for us—one of unwavering commitment to God’s will, even in the face of overwhelming circumstances.

Prayer to the Father
Heavenly Father, as the day begins, I come before You with a heart full of gratitude for Your eternal plan of salvation. You have shown me the depth of Your love through the sending of Your Son, Jesus, and I stand in awe of Your greatness. I confess that too often I allow the noise of the world to distract me from the peace that You offer. Yet, in these moments of stillness, I find rest in knowing that You are greater than all things. Just as You are greater than the Son, Your power and wisdom far surpass my understanding. Lord, I want to align myself with Your will today. Help me to follow Your commands with the same obedience that Jesus showed. May I never lose sight of Your goodness and sovereignty, no matter what trials I face. Let Your peace guard my heart and mind as I go about my day, and may Your love fill me to overflowing. Thank You for being my refuge, my strength, and my hope.
Prayer to the Son
Lord Jesus, my Savior, I am in awe of Your love for the Father, which led You to willingly obey even to the point of death. I confess that I often struggle with obedience, but I am inspired by Your example. Your willingness to lay down Your life for the sake of the world is an insight into the kind of love You call me to have. Today, as I face challenges and temptations, I pray for the strength to follow Your example of obedience, no matter the cost. Thank You for showing me that nothing can separate me from the love of the Father. Even as You knew what lay ahead, You remained steadfast in Your commitment to fulfill the will of God. Teach me, O Lord, to have such resolve in my own life. Let me find joy in obedience, as You did, and may my love for You overflow into every action and word.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, I thank You for Your presence within me, guiding me into all truth and helping me to walk in the path that Jesus has set before me. As I start this day, I ask for Your insight into the scriptures and Your gentle guidance throughout every decision and action. Help me to be sensitive to Your leading, and fill me with the peace that Jesus spoke of when He said, “My peace I give to you.” I cannot navigate this world alone, and I recognize that it is only by Your power that I can live out the will of the Father. Empower me to face the day with the courage and conviction that comes from knowing You are with me. When the trials of this world seek to discourage me, remind me of Your constant presence and Your role in my life as my comforter, advocate, and guide. May I be ever aware of Your working in my life, as You help me grow more like Christ.
