Luke 19:10 – Faithfully Present
Have you ever stopped to think about just how far God goes to pursue us? Luke 19:10 tells us, “The Son of Man came to find lost people and save them.” That’s not just a passing statement—it’s a declaration of His relentless love and determination. Jesus doesn’t just sit back and wait for us to get our act together; He actively seeks us out, even when we’re not looking for Him. That’s the kind of love that changes everything.
I love thinking of God as the One who follows. It’s not about Him trailing behind us in frustration, shaking His head at our wrong turns. No, He’s the God who patiently, persistently, and lovingly pursues us. Have you felt Him near you? Maybe it was through the kindness of a stranger when you least expected it, or perhaps through the wonder of a breathtaking sunset that seemed to pour peace right into your soul. He shows up in the smallest, most ordinary moments—through the laughter of a child, the warmth of a spouse’s embrace, or even in the quiet stillness of a well-timed word.
God isn’t just a distant observer in our lives. He’s actively present, and not just when we’re in church or reading our Bibles. He’s there when we’re at our best, but He’s also there when we’ve hit rock bottom. And here’s the kicker: He doesn’t force His way into our lives. Even when we stubbornly choose our own mess over His grace, He doesn’t leave. He stays. He waits. He follows.
That’s what gets me every time—His faithful presence. God doesn’t give up, even when we do. He uses everything at His disposal to remind us of who He is and how much He loves us. The beauty of His creation, the wisdom of Scripture, the people He places in our lives—these are His tools to nudge us closer to Him. He’s not just shouting directions from a distance. He’s walking right beside us, ready to lead us home if we’re willing to follow.
This truth is especially meaningful when we think about Jesus’ mission. His whole life was about seeking and saving the lost. It wasn’t glamorous or easy; it meant walking through the messiness of humanity, enduring rejection, and ultimately giving His life on the cross. That’s the extent of His love for us. And the best part? He didn’t do it out of obligation. He did it because His heart beats for us, for you, for me.
So how do we respond to a God who refuses to give up on us? First, we can stop running. Maybe you’ve been running from God for a while, thinking He’s far off or uninterested. But the truth is, He’s been right there the whole time, waiting for you to turn around. Second, we can trust Him. If God is willing to go to such great lengths to find us, don’t you think He’s worth following? Third, we can be faithful to His presence in our own lives—showing up for others as He has shown up for us. That’s how we reflect His love to the world.
I think about how often we get caught up in the chaos of life and forget that God is quietly pursuing us. It’s easy to miss the subtle ways He speaks to us when we’re too busy chasing our own plans. But when we slow down, when we really pay attention, we start to notice His handprints all over our lives. The God who follows isn’t far away. He’s closer than we realize, gently inviting us to trust Him, to rest in His love, and to let Him lead.
There’s an old hymn that says, “Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God.” That’s the heart of the Gospel, isn’t it? We’re wanderers by nature, but He’s the Good Shepherd who comes after us, no matter how far we’ve strayed. He’s not put off by our failures or deterred by our stubbornness. His love is stronger than that, and His grace is bigger than we can imagine.
