A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken
Scripture: Psalm 22:28
“For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.”
As the sun sets and the chaos of the day quiets, I return to a truth that anchors my soul: “Dominion belongs to the Lord.” In a world where power is grasped, manipulated, and often abused, this verse in Psalm 22 draws our gaze upward. It reminds us that God is not a passive observer of world affairs—He is sovereign. His rule is not a distant ideal; it is an active reality. Even when His reign is hidden from human eyes, it is never absent.
This verse lands near the end of a psalm that begins in anguish. David’s words open with, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”—a cry echoed by Jesus on the cross. Psalm 22 walks us through the valley of suffering, betrayal, mockery, and torment. Yet even in that valley, the psalm turns toward hope. By verse 28, we’re no longer in the grip of despair. We’re looking to the throne. God’s dominion isn’t shaken by our circumstances. He rules over the nations, not within the limits of their power.
This gives me comfort at the end of the day. I may not understand the headlines. I may feel powerless over world events, family concerns, or personal struggles. But I’m reminded that the Lord is not just my God—He is King over all. He is orchestrating history, even through the choices of flawed leaders and imperfect people. His rule transcends borders, governments, and generations.
As I rest tonight, I choose to surrender the illusion of control and embrace the peace of trust. God has dominion. And that dominion is not partial or contested—it is complete. His kingdom does not rise or fall with the news cycle. It is eternal, just, and rooted in love. That’s the reign under which I live and sleep tonight.
Evening Prayer
To the Heavenly Father:
Father, as I lay down to rest, I find peace in the knowledge that You reign. Yours is the dominion, not just over my life, but over the nations. In a world of unrest and uncertainty, You remain unshaken. You see what I cannot see. You guide what I cannot control. I confess that I often worry about the affairs of this world, about things far beyond my reach. But You, Lord, hold it all. Thank You for reminding me tonight that I do not need to carry what You already rule over. Help me release the burdens I have picked up today, and trust them into Your sovereign care.
To the Son, Jesus Christ:
Lord Jesus, You knew the agony of Psalm 22 in Your flesh. You cried out in abandonment so that I might never be truly forsaken. From the cross, You declared the triumph of God’s kingdom not through force, but through sacrifice. You are the King who conquered by surrendering. As I consider the world You died to redeem, I ask You to teach me to live in light of that redemption. Let Your lordship shape how I treat others, how I respond to conflict, how I serve in Your name. When fear tempts me to forget who rules, draw me back to the truth of Your victory.
To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, breathe peace into my weary soul tonight. Whisper the truths of Scripture back to my heart. Remind me that I belong to a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. When the news is grim and the future feels uncertain, help me remember that You are active in the present. Guide my thoughts as I fall asleep. Fill my dreams with assurance. Stir in me a quiet confidence that rests in Your power and presence. You are not a bystander in history—you are the Helper, the Comforter, the One who reveals the rule of the Father and the reign of the Son. Help me sleep in that assurance.
