Living as Children of Light
Scripture: Ephesians 5:8
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
As we awaken to a new day, this verse from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians calls us to remember who we are in Christ. We were once living in darkness—not simply surrounded by it, but identified with it. Darkness symbolizes not only ignorance but also separation from God, confusion, and moral blindness. But now, through the mercy of Jesus Christ, we are no longer identified with darkness. We are light in the Lord. Not just in the light, but are light—a radical transformation of identity.
This change means we must live with intention. Being children of light is not a passive state; it’s an active, daily choice. Just as light exposes what is hidden and provides guidance, our lives are to reflect God’s truth, grace, and love to a darkened world. The workplace, the grocery store, the school drop-off line—these are not just daily routines. They are mission fields. Our speech, our integrity, our kindness, and our willingness to forgive must all shine brightly with the character of Christ. In a culture where deception and self-centeredness dominate, the authentic light of a believer stands out and provides a beacon of hope.
Yet, living as children of light is not about perfection, but transformation. It’s about daily steps in the Spirit—confessing when we fail, seeking renewal when we falter, and choosing once again to walk in the brightness of His presence. When we stumble, the light of Christ not only reveals our missteps but also lights the path forward. This is why starting our day in the presence of God is vital. It realigns us, re-centers us, and reminds us that we are no longer who we once were. We are light in the Lord. And today is another chance to let that light shine.
Morning Prayer
To the Heavenly Father:
Gracious FATHER, thank You for calling me out of the darkness and into Your marvelous light. I acknowledge that I once walked in confusion, pride, and sin, but You have graciously rewritten my story. As the sun rises this morning, I feel the warmth of Your mercy and the clarity of Your truth. Teach me to reflect Your nature today. Help me walk as Your child, bearing the fruit of light—goodness, righteousness, and truth. May my life be pleasing to You and may my conduct point others toward Your love.
To the Son:
Precious JESUS, You are the Light of the World, and by Your sacrifice, You have made me a child of light. Thank You for illuminating my path and for never giving up on me, even when I wandered in shadows. Today, I ask You to live through me. Let Your compassion guide my words and Your holiness shape my actions. Give me courage to speak truth with love, and to stand firm in faith, even when the world seems dim. Remind me that my identity is secure in You, and that through You, I can be a light in the darkness for someone who is searching for hope.
To the Holy Spirit:
HOLY SPIRIT, fill me anew this morning. Shine through every crevice of my heart and expose anything that does not reflect Your glory. Empower me to walk in wisdom, to make godly decisions, and to live with a spirit of grace and humility. You are the flame that lights my soul; keep me burning brightly with a passion for the Kingdom. Guide my interactions, soften my responses, and teach me how to be a bearer of Your peace. Transform my routine into divine appointments and let every moment be an opportunity to glorify the LORD.
Thought for the Day:
Light isn’t something you merely step into—it’s something you become in Christ. Let every choice today reflect your new identity.
Blessing:
Thank you for beginning your day in the presence of the LORD. May His light shine upon your path, His peace guard your heart, and His purpose guide your every step. Go forth in grace and truth as a true child of the light.
