A Life Lit by the Light
Scripture: Ephesians 5:8–9
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”
As the sun sets and quiet begins to settle over our homes and hearts, this passage from Ephesians brings us to a beautiful place of reflection. Paul reminds us of a stark contrast—not just that we lived in darkness, but that we were darkness. This wasn’t a matter of surroundings or circumstances; it was our very nature before Christ. But in Him, everything changes. We are now light—not merely illuminated by God’s grace but transformed into carriers of that light in a darkened world.
This transformation shapes not only how we think but how we live. Paul calls us to live as children of light, and that phrase lingers with me tonight. It isn’t just about spiritual status—it’s about spiritual action. Light has fruit, Paul says, and it shows up in goodness, righteousness, and truth. As the world winds down for the day, I find myself wondering: Did I walk in light today? Were my interactions marked by goodness? Was I committed to righteousness in my thoughts and choices? Did I tell the truth—even the hard truth—with grace?
These questions are not meant to shame us but to center us. As children of light, we are learning daily to live out what we’ve already been made in Christ. We are not perfect, but we are purposeful. Every choice, every word, every moment becomes an opportunity to reflect the One who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). And even if we stumbled today, grace invites us to realign. The light still shines. The invitation still stands: walk in it.
Evening Prayer
To the Heavenly Father:
FATHER, as I come to the close of this day, I thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your light. You are eternal, holy, and good, and yet You’ve chosen to make Your home in my heart. I confess that not every moment today reflected the light You’ve placed within me. There were times when I reacted in frustration, when I spoke too quickly, or stayed silent when truth was needed. But even in my failings, Your mercy remains. FATHER, teach me to live more faithfully tomorrow. Let Your goodness not only dwell in me but flow through me. May I hunger for righteousness more than comfort, and may Your truth shape the way I speak, serve, and love. Thank You for walking with me today. I rest in Your grace tonight.
To the Son:
JESUS, Light of the world, how amazing it is that You’ve chosen to share Your light with me. You did not just rescue me from sin—you gave me a new identity. I was once darkness, but now I am light in You. You have redeemed my story, and You invite me to reflect Your character. Today, there were moments when I remembered Your example and tried to walk in Your steps. Thank You for those quiet victories. And thank You for interceding for me when I fell short. I ask You, JESUS, to continue shaping me. Teach me to embody goodness not just in action, but in intention. Teach me righteousness—not as a burden, but as a joy. And keep truth ever on my lips, spoken with compassion and courage. You are my light, and I want to shine with You.
To the Holy Spirit:
HOLY SPIRIT, I welcome You again tonight. You were with me every step of this day, whispering guidance, offering conviction, and pouring out peace. Sometimes I listened, and sometimes I resisted, but You never withdrew. Thank You for Your patience. Spirit of truth, grow Your fruit in me. Let the goodness that comes from Your presence take root in how I treat others. Let righteousness be my posture, not just my ambition. Help me see truth not as an argument to win but as a light to carry. Illuminate my mind even as I sleep, preparing me for the work of tomorrow. Fill me again, HOLY SPIRIT, so that I wake with courage, speak with love, and live with clarity. I long to live as a true child of light. Shine through me.
Thought for the Day:
You are not only walking in the light—you are light in the Lord. Let every part of your day reflect the goodness, righteousness, and truth He has placed within you.
Blessing:
Thank you for your faithful service to the Lord’s work today, whether seen or unseen. May He renew your strength as you rest, restore your joy as you reflect, and ready your heart for another day of living in His marvelous light. You are dearly loved and purposefully placed.
