Worship Before Worry
Anchoring the Day in Praise
Scripture Reference: Psalm 138:1-2 (ESV)
“I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.”
Devotional Meditation:
David begins Psalm 138 with a bold declaration: “I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart.” There is no hesitancy in his devotion. He praises God not in isolation or secrecy but “before the gods,” likely referencing rulers, idols, or even spiritual forces of opposition. David chooses to begin his day in complete, unapologetic worship. In a culture that so often begins with worry, stress, or hurried distraction, this Psalm calls us to center our mornings in gratitude and truth.
There is something deeply formative about morning praise. When we start with thanksgiving, we are reminded of God’s steadfast love and His unwavering faithfulness. These two attributes often bookend our lived experiences: His love carries us through hardship, and His faithfulness assures us He never lets go. David highlights that God has exalted both His name and His word—His identity and His promises. That pairing offers a firm foundation for our lives. We worship not only because of what God has said but because of who He is.
Not long ago, I was wrestling with a decision that weighed heavily on my heart. Instead of rushing into problem-solving mode, I paused, opened the Psalms, and allowed my soul to catch up with God’s presence. That morning, reading Psalm 138, I was reminded that my peace was not dependent on the outcome but on the One who had spoken love and faithfulness over my life. The decision didn’t get easier, but I was no longer alone or directionless. The morning moment of praise recalibrated my day.
May we learn to bow our hearts toward the temple of God’s goodness each morning, to begin not with burdens but with blessing.
Triune Prayer:
Father,
I come before You this morning with a grateful heart. You are the One who holds the heavens in place and yet hears the whispers of my soul. Thank You for waking me with breath in my lungs and a new opportunity to know You more deeply. Help me to honor Your name today, to walk with integrity and truth, and to see Your hand in both the quiet and chaotic moments of my life. You are faithful, and I praise You for Your steadfast love that has never failed me.
Son,
Jesus, You are the living Word exalted above all things. You are my Savior and Shepherd, the One who walked the road of suffering so I might walk in grace. Thank You for interceding for me even now, for understanding my weaknesses, and for being patient with my growth. Teach me to trust in Your promises and to walk in obedience to Your call. May my life today reflect Your mercy, humility, and servant heart. Help me sing Your praise in the face of trials.
Holy Spirit,
Fill me anew this morning. Quiet the noise of distraction and tune my ears to Your voice. Guide my steps, counsel my heart, and empower my actions. Where I am weak, be my strength. Where I am uncertain, be my light. Open my eyes to see divine appointments and moments of ministry hidden in the ordinary. Make my day a song of praise to the Trinity. Let my life bear fruit that brings glory to the Father, honor to the Son, and joy to the Spirit. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Start your day with thanksgiving, not tasks. Let praise shape your perspective before problems steal your peace.
Blessing:
Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May His love uphold you, His Word guide you, and His Spirit fill you with purpose and peace.
