As the Day Begins
Scripture: “Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:10–11, NIV)
Devotional Meditation
The Apostle Paul draws our attention to a truth we sometimes forget in the busyness of life: love is not merely a feeling or sentiment, but an action rooted in God’s law. “Love does no harm to a neighbor” is more than just a moral guideline—it is a calling to embody the character of Christ in our daily relationships. Every word we speak, every decision we make, every interaction we have becomes an opportunity either to wound or to heal. Love, Paul reminds us, chooses always to bless rather than to harm.
Paul then makes a shift from principle to urgency: “The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber.” Spiritual drowsiness is one of the greatest dangers in the Christian walk. We can become lulled by comfort, routine, or distraction until we lose sight of the nearness of God’s kingdom. Paul’s call to “wake up” is not just about being alert—it’s about living with holy expectation. Our salvation, he says, is nearer now than when we first believed. With each sunrise, we step closer to the day when Christ will return, and this awareness should shape our priorities and sharpen our obedience.
This passage invites us to examine our day with fresh eyes. What would it mean to live today fully awake to God’s presence? How might we actively show love in our workplaces, homes, and communities? To love well is to reflect Christ Himself, who laid down His life so that we might be reconciled to the Father. To wake up spiritually is to shake off the lethargy of sin and distraction, and to walk intentionally in faith, knowing that eternity is breaking into the present moment. As you step into today, remember: to love is to fulfill God’s law, and to live awake is to prepare for His glorious return.
Triune Prayer
To the Father:
Heavenly Father, I come before You at the start of this day, grateful for the love You have poured into my life. You are the Giver of every good gift, and I thank You for the mercy that has shielded me and the grace that continues to guide me. Father, awaken my heart from any complacency or weariness. Open my eyes to the needs around me and teach me to love others as You have loved me. Guard me from selfishness, and let my words and actions reflect Your truth and compassion in every encounter today.
To the Son:
Lord Jesus, my Savior and Redeemer, I praise You for laying down Your life out of love for me. You are the perfect example of what it means to fulfill the law through love. Help me to remember the cost of that love and to carry it with me in my dealings with neighbors, coworkers, family, and strangers. Teach me to deny myself and take up my cross daily. Keep me from falling back into spiritual slumber, and give me courage to walk in the light of Your presence. May my life bear witness that You are alive and reigning, and that Your return draws nearer with each passing day.
To the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, Counselor and Comforter, fill me anew this morning with Your wisdom and power. I confess that without You I am prone to wander, distracted by lesser things. Stir my spirit so that I may live awake, discerning what is true and pleasing to the Lord. Empower me to love in ways that go beyond my natural ability. Give me patience when I am tested, kindness when I am overlooked, and joy when I am tempted to despair. Guide my steps and let Your fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—flow through me as a testimony of Your presence in my life.
Thought for the Day
To love others is to fulfill God’s law, and to live awake to Christ’s return is to make each day count for eternity.
Thank you for beginning your day in God’s presence. May you walk in the light of His love, wide awake to His calling, and faithful in showing kindness and grace wherever He sends you.
