As the Day Begins
“God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:16)
The Christian life does not begin with our ability to reach God; it begins with God’s willingness to reach us. John reminds us that God is not merely loving—God is love. Love is not simply something He does; it is part of His very nature. When we dwell in His love, we are not entering an unfamiliar place. We are entering the very heart of God. That truth changes the way we face each day. Too many believers begin their mornings carrying the burden of yesterday’s failures, wondering if they have disappointed God beyond measure. Yet Scripture paints a different picture. The Father who redeemed us through Christ understands our weaknesses, remembers our limitations, and continues to draw us toward Himself.
The psalmist wrote, “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14). God sees every flaw, every struggle, every hidden fear, and still invites us into fellowship. He is not surprised by our imperfections. He is shaping us through them. Like a loving father teaching a child to walk, He rejoices not merely in perfection but in progress. His discipline is never rejection; it is the loving correction of One who sees what we can become through His grace. The Greek word for love used by John is agapē (ἀγάπη), describing a self-giving, steadfast love that seeks the good of another regardless of merit. That is the love that welcomes us this morning.
Instead of exhausting ourselves trying to earn God’s approval, we can rest in what He has already provided through Jesus Christ. Our growth comes not from frantic striving but from abiding. The more time we spend in His presence, the more His character is reflected in our lives. Just as a child gradually resembles a parent, believers increasingly resemble Christ through daily communion with Him. Today is another opportunity to trust that God understands more than we realize and loves more deeply than we can comprehend.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me with a love that is constant and faithful. You know my strengths and weaknesses, my victories and failures, yet You continue to welcome me into Your presence. Help me begin this day resting in Your grace rather than striving in my own strength. Teach me to trust Your patience and to remember that Your love is greater than my shortcomings.
Jesus the Son, thank You for making the Father’s love visible through Your life, death, and resurrection. Because of Your sacrifice, I can come boldly before God without fear or shame. Walk with me throughout this day. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so that others may see Your character reflected in my life. Help me abide in You and draw strength from Your presence.
Holy Spirit, fill my heart with the assurance of God’s love. Remind me when doubts arise that I belong to Him. Lead me into truth, strengthen me against temptation, and produce within me the fruit of love, joy, peace, and faithfulness. Keep my heart sensitive to Your guidance and my eyes fixed upon Christ throughout this day.
Thought for the Day
When you are tempted to focus on your imperfections, remember that God already knows them completely—and loves you completely. Begin today not by trying to earn His favor, but by resting in the favor He has already given through Christ.
