As the Day Begins
“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
Ephesians 5:17
Freedom is one of God’s great gifts, but Scripture teaches us that freedom without wisdom can become another kind of bondage. Paul writes to the church at Ephesus and tells them not to live “unwise,” but to understand the will of the Lord. The Greek word translated “understanding” carries the idea of bringing things together in the mind, grasping how God’s truth fits into daily life. Christian liberty is not merely the freedom to choose; it is the grace to choose what pleases God.
This means the believer begins the day not by asking, “What am I free to do?” but “Lord, what is Your will for me today?” Christ shows us the highest use of freedom. Though He is Lord of all, He took the form of a servant. He was not diminished by serving; He revealed divine greatness through it. The freest person in the room is not the one with no obligations, but the one whose heart is so surrendered to God that service becomes joy.
Father, I thank You for the freedom You have given me through Your mercy. Teach me not to waste liberty on selfish living, but to use this day with moral clarity, wisdom, and love. Help me understand Your will in ordinary choices, hidden responsibilities, and unexpected interruptions.
Son, Lord Jesus, I thank You for showing me that true greatness is found in humble service. You were free, yet You gave Yourself fully for others. Shape my will until I desire what You desire, love what You love, and serve where You place me today.
Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts, words, and actions. Keep me from careless freedom and make me sensitive to the needs around me. Fill me with discernment, patience, and obedience, so that my life today reflects the will of the Lord with grace and strength.
