As the Day Begins
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” — Genesis 6:8
Genesis 6 describes a world overwhelmed by violence, corruption, and continual rebellion against God. Yet amid this dark account, one sentence shines like a lamp in a storm: “Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” The Hebrew word translated “grace” is ḥēn, meaning favor, kindness, or gracious acceptance. Noah was not preserved because he had earned immunity from judgment. He was preserved because God looked upon him with undeserved favor, and Noah responded by trusting and obeying what God revealed.
This same saving grace reaches us through Jesus Christ. Grace is not God pretending that sin does not matter; it is God providing what sinners could never provide for themselves. Before the Law, under the Law, and after the cross, salvation has always rested upon God’s gracious initiative. As I begin this day, I do not have to prove that I deserve God’s attention. I awaken already dependent upon His mercy. Like Noah building an ark before rain appeared, I am called to let faith turn grace into obedient action. God’s grace finds me where I am, but it lovingly refuses to leave me unchanged.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your grace is greater than my failures and more enduring than my changing emotions. I confess that I sometimes approach You as though I must earn Your welcome. Help me begin this day resting in Your faithful character. Teach me to recognize Your favor, respond with humility, and obey even when I cannot yet see where obedience will lead.
Jesus the Son, I praise You because saving grace has taken visible form in Your incarnation, cross, and resurrection. You carried the judgment my sin deserved and opened the way for my new birth from above. Keep me near You today. Let my words, decisions, and treatment of others reveal that I have received mercy rather than merely learned religious language.
Holy Spirit, awaken my heart to the daily activity of grace. Guide my thoughts before they become careless words, strengthen me when temptation appears, and correct me when pride begins to rise. Produce in me a willing obedience like Noah’s—patient, steady, and faithful. Help me extend to others the kindness, forgiveness, and patience that I have received from God.
Thought for the Day
I will not spend today trying to earn the grace God freely gives. I will receive His favor through faith in Jesus Christ and demonstrate that faith through one clear act of obedience, mercy, or forgiveness.
Genesis 6:8 teaches that Noah found grace before he built the ark. His obedience did not purchase God’s favor; it revealed his trusting response to favor already given. In Christian theology, saving grace is God’s undeserved kindness toward sinners, ultimately revealed through the life, atoning death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Grace therefore becomes both the foundation of salvation and the power for faithful living. The believer does not obey in order to become loved by God but obeys because God’s love has already been graciously extended.
