As the Day Ends
“And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
—Exodus 3:11
As this day comes to a close, Moses’ question gives us permission to admit our inadequacy before God. He did not respond to the burning bush with ambition or self-congratulation. He looked at Pharaoh, remembered his failures, measured the enormous assignment, and asked, “Who am I?” Yet God did not answer by listing Moses’ strengths. He answered with the promise, “Certainly I will be with thee” (Exodus 3:12). The call rested not upon Moses’ confidence but upon God’s presence.
There is a holy weight attached to speaking for God. Scripture shows that many whom God called were reluctant because they understood something of the responsibility. Jeremiah felt too young. Isaiah became conscious of his unclean lips. Amos had not pursued the office of prophet. Paul said that necessity had been laid upon him to preach the gospel. Genuine ministry is not primarily a platform we seek but a stewardship we receive. Yet the call to serve is not limited to preachers. Every Christian may be sent into a conversation, a household, a workplace, a hospital room, or a wounded life with a word of grace. Tonight, we can release both pride and fear. We need not appoint ourselves, and we need not hide when God truly sends us. Our task is to listen, obey, and trust the One who goes with us.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your purposes do not depend upon my natural confidence, eloquence, or strength. Forgive me for the times I have sought recognition rather than obedience, and for the times I have used my weakness as an excuse to avoid Your direction. Teach me to recognize the difference between selfish ambition and a genuine call from You. As I rest tonight, quiet every anxious question within me and remind me that Your presence is greater than every assignment You place before me.
Jesus the Son, You came not to be served but to serve and to give Your life as a ransom for many. Thank You for showing me that true ministry is not self-promotion but sacrificial love. Guard me from speaking in my own pride or using sacred things for personal importance. When You send me to encourage, teach, comfort, correct, or witness, help me represent Your character faithfully. Give me the humility to follow Your example and the courage to obey even when I feel unqualified.
Holy Spirit, make me attentive to Your voice. Reveal where You are calling me to serve, and give me discernment so that I neither rush ahead of You nor retreat from Your leading. Place the right words in my heart, govern my motives, and enable me to translate God’s truth into language that brings light rather than confusion. Let me sleep without striving, trusting that the One who calls also equips. Prepare me to rise tomorrow ready to say yes wherever obedience is required.
Thought for the Evening
Before sleep, ask God one honest question: “Where are You calling me to serve?” Then release both your ambition and your fear, trusting that God’s presence will be sufficient for whatever He asks.
