As the Day Begins
“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection.”
—Hebrews 6:1
Spiritual growth does not happen merely because time passes. We may attend worship, listen to sermons, read devotional articles, and speak the language of faith while remaining unchanged in the places where God has already told us what to do. Hebrews 6:1 calls believers to “go on unto perfection.” The Greek word translated “perfection,” teleiotēs, refers to maturity, completeness, and movement toward God’s intended purpose. The writer is not demanding sinless performance; he is calling Christians to stop circling familiar truths without allowing those truths to transform their conduct.
There can be much religious motion without genuine spiritual progress. Like someone walking on a treadmill, we may expend energy while remaining in the same place. Often the obstacle is not a lack of biblical knowledge but resistance to a known act of obedience. God may be calling us to forgive, confess, serve, surrender, reconcile, or abandon a hidden compromise. Until we obey Him at that clear point, additional religious activity cannot substitute for submission. The heart that yields to God becomes like clay in the potter’s hands—soft, responsive, and ready to be formed.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for patiently teaching me and calling me toward spiritual maturity. Forgive me for the times I have confused religious activity with faithful obedience. Show me where I have been moving without progressing and listening without responding. I place my plans, habits, desires, and fears before You. Shape me according to Your wisdom, and give me the humility to obey what You have already made clear.
Jesus the Son, thank You for demonstrating perfect obedience to the Father, even when obedience led You through rejection, suffering, and the cross. You did not merely speak about surrender; You lived it completely. Help me follow You today, not only in the truths I enjoy but also in the commands that challenge my pride and comfort. Teach me to trust that whatever You ask me to release is smaller than the life You are forming within me.
Holy Spirit, search my heart and reveal any area where I am resisting Your guidance. Give me strength to take the next faithful step without delay, excuse, or fear. Remind me of Christ’s words throughout this day, and make my heart responsive to Your conviction. Produce in me the willingness to listen, the courage to act, and the perseverance to continue growing until my life reflects the character of Jesus.
Thought for the Day
I will not measure my spiritual growth by how much religious activity fills my schedule. I will measure it by how willingly I respond when God speaks. Today, I will identify one clear area in which Scripture calls me to act, and I will take a specific step of obedience before the day ends.
Hebrews 6:1 teaches that Christian maturity requires intentional movement beyond elementary instruction into an obedient, Christ-shaped life. Biblical obedience is not an attempt to earn salvation; it is the faithful response of a person who has received God’s grace. Spiritual stagnation occurs when believers repeatedly hear truth but refuse to practice it. Genuine Christian growth becomes visible through surrendered choices, transformed relationships, increasing discernment, and a willingness to follow God even when obedience is uncomfortable. As 1 Samuel 15:22 declares, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Worship offered without submission becomes empty motion, but worship flowing from an obedient heart becomes a living testimony to the transforming power of Christ.
