As the Day Begins
“And every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
—Philippians 2:11
There is a difference between inviting Jesus into part of our lives and recognizing that every part of our lives already belongs to Him. Philippians 2:11 does not merely ask us to speak respectfully about Christ. It declares that Jesus Christ is Lord. The Greek word translated “Lord” is kyrios, a title expressing authority, ownership, and rightful rule. To confess Jesus as Lord is to acknowledge that He has the right to direct my decisions, shape my character, correct my desires, and determine how I will live.
That confession becomes especially important as a new day begins. It is easy to give Christ a place among our plans while quietly keeping control of the plans themselves. We may pray for His blessing without seeking His direction. We may ask Him to walk beside us while resisting any road we did not choose. Yet Jesus did not come merely to become one helpful influence among many. He came as King, Savior, and Lord.
A. W. Tozer warned that the spiritual weakness of the Church is connected to its failure to restore Christ to His rightful place. That restoration begins personally. Before we concern ourselves with what society, congregations, or other Christians are doing, we must ask whether Jesus occupies the throne of our own hearts. His lordship must reach our homes, conversations, schedules, finances, relationships, and private thoughts.
Giving Christ His rightful place does not diminish life; it brings life into its proper order. Think of the sun at the center of the solar system. The planets remain in their proper courses because they revolve around the correct center. When something other than Christ becomes the center—approval, comfort, ambition, fear, or self-will—our spiritual lives begin to drift. But when Jesus is central, everything else can find its appropriate place.
Heavenly Father, I begin this day by acknowledging that You are the source of my life and the giver of every good thing. Thank You for loving me enough not to leave me ruled by my own limited understanding. Forgive me for the times I have asked You to bless decisions I had already made rather than humbly seeking Your will. Help me surrender my plans, attitudes, relationships, and responsibilities to You. May everything I do today bring glory to Your name.
Jesus the Son, I confess that You are Lord. You are not merely part of my life; my life belongs to You. Take Your rightful place in my heart today. Rule over my words before I speak them, my reactions before I express them, and my choices before I make them. When obedience feels inconvenient, remind me that Your wisdom is greater than my preference. Teach me to follow You with humility, courage, and joy.
Holy Spirit, examine every hidden room of my heart. Reveal anything competing with Christ for authority in my life. Give me discernment to recognize the subtle ways pride, fear, convenience, or resentment attempt to control me. Fill me with strength to live differently from the world without becoming harsh toward those around me. Produce within me the character of Jesus so that my conduct quietly declares what my lips confess: Jesus Christ is Lord.
Thought for the Day
Before making today’s plans, decisions, and responses, pause and ask: “Does this give Jesus His rightful place?” Confessing Christ as Lord is more than a statement made in worship—it is a daily decision to place His authority above our impulses, preferences, and fears.
