As the Day Ends
“For you have need of patience, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.”
—Hebrews 10:36
As this day draws to a close, it may feel as though the world never stopped moving. There was another demand, another headline, another promise that something new would finally make life secure. The world is constantly hurrying toward its next solution, but the Christian does not have to join that nervous scramble. We have met the One the world is still trying to find.
Hebrews reminds us that faithfulness requires patience. The Greek word translated “patience,” hypomonē, describes steadfast endurance—the strength to remain beneath a burden without abandoning trust. Biblical patience is not doing nothing. It is continuing to do the will of God while trusting Him with the timing of the promise.
A. W. Tozer described the Christian life through a series of beautiful paradoxes. We empty ourselves in order to be filled. We admit we are wrong so that God may declare us righteous through Christ. We become strongest when we recognize our weakness. We give away what cannot last so that we may receive what cannot be taken away.
These truths sound strange to a world built upon visible results and immediate rewards. Yet the gospel has always taught us to see beyond appearances. We love Christ though we have not seen Him with our physical eyes. We speak with God in prayer though He remains unseen. We trust the righteousness of Another rather than relying upon our own. Faith rests because it knows that invisible does not mean unreal.
The person who has encountered God is no longer desperate for every new promise of fulfillment. We do not have to run behind every parade simply because someone is blowing a whistle. We are listening for another sound—the trumpet of God announcing that Christ has returned and the long-promised renewal of creation has begun.
Tonight, you can afford to wait. The Lord has not forgotten what He promised. Rest is not a failure to make progress. Sometimes rest is the clearest declaration that God remains in control.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that I do not have to carry the world into the night. Forgive me for the moments when I have mistaken hurry for faithfulness and anxiety for responsibility. Help me release every unfinished task, unanswered question, and uncertain outcome into Your hands. Teach me to trust Your wisdom when Your timing is slower than my preference.
Jesus the Son, thank You for becoming my righteousness, my hope, and my lasting treasure. You entered suffering without abandoning the Father’s will, and You endured the cross because You saw the joy beyond it. When I am weary, remind me that patience is not wasted time. Help me remain faithful while I wait for Your promises to unfold.
Holy Spirit, quiet the nervous movement within my soul. Turn my attention away from the world’s noise and toward the steady voice of Scripture. Produce in me endurance, peace, and spiritual discernment. As I sleep, restore my strength and prepare me to rise tomorrow with a heart that is not hurried, but ready to obey.

Lay down one burden you cannot resolve tonight. Tell God plainly that you trust Him with both the outcome and the timing, then allow your body and mind to rest.
