When Fear No Longer Holds the Reins

As the Day Ends

“Neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” — Acts 20:24

Paul’s words carry unusual freedom. He is not saying life has no value. He is saying that obedience to Christ has become more valuable to him than preserving comfort, reputation, or even personal safety. His great concern is to “finish my course” and remain faithful to the ministry entrusted to him.

A. W. Tozer presses that same truth when he writes about believers who become spiritually “expendable.” His language is intentionally forceful, but the heart of the message is simple: Christians become courageous when they stop allowing fear to make their decisions. Fear of criticism can silence us. Fear of rejection can make us compromise. Fear of losing influence can tempt us to soften obedience. Yet a person surrendered to Christ is increasingly free from those pressures.

As this day ends, it is worth asking what influenced our choices. Did I speak because it was true, or remain silent because silence was safer? Did I serve because Christ called me, or because someone might notice? Did I avoid obedience because I feared what someone would think? Paul’s life reminds us that spiritual courage begins long before any dramatic crisis. It begins when the heart quietly decides, “Lord, my life belongs to You.”

Triune Prayer

Father, as this day closes, I thank You that my life is held securely in Your hands. Forgive me for the moments when fear, approval, or self-protection influenced me more than obedience. Free me from the need to control what others think of me. Give me courage that is neither harsh nor reckless, but steady because it rests in You. Teach me to value faithfulness more than recognition and obedience more than comfort.

Jesus the Son, You did not turn away from the path the Father placed before You. You endured rejection, misunderstanding, suffering, and the cross without surrendering Your mission. Help me follow You with that same settled heart. Let my greatest desire be to finish what You have entrusted to me faithfully. When I am tempted to choose the easier road simply because it is easier, remind me that Your grace is sufficient and Your presence is greater than my fear.

Holy Spirit, search my motives tonight. Show me where I am driven by fear, reputation, habit, or the desire to please people. Replace those pressures with quiet confidence in God. Strengthen me to speak when I should speak, remain silent when wisdom requires it, serve without applause, and obey without demanding certainty about the outcome. Give me rest tonight and renewed courage for whatever obedience tomorrow requires.

Thought for the Evening

Before you sleep, place one fear before God that has been influencing your obedience. Then pray simply: “Lord, let faithfulness—not fear—make this decision.”

Acts 20:24 presents Christian courage as the freedom to complete Christ’s calling without allowing self-preservation to become our master. True spiritual boldness grows from surrender, not personality.
