As the Day Ends
“May He equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ.” — Hebrews 13:21
As this day comes to a close, Hebrews 13:21 gives us a larger way to think about salvation. It is certainly true that Christ saves us from judgment. It is certainly true that the debt of sin has been paid at the cross. But A. W. Tozer presses us beyond stopping there. He argues that God’s purpose in redemption is not merely to rescue us from what sin deserves, but to reproduce the character of Jesus Christ within the lives He has redeemed.
That changes the way I examine my day. Instead of asking only, “Did I avoid serious sin?” I can ask, “Did Christ become more visible in me today?” Was I more patient because Jesus is patient? Did I speak truth because Christ is truth? Did I forgive because I have been forgiven? Did I serve when no one noticed? Salvation is not simply God getting us out of danger. It is God bringing us into transformation.
Paul described that transformation in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Tozer connects that truth with the cross and resurrection, reminding us that Christ did not die simply to erase our past. He rose so that His life might increasingly shape our present.
There is great comfort in Hebrews 13:21 because the verse does not place the entire burden upon us. God Himself is “working in us that which is well-pleasing in His sight.” We cooperate, surrender, obey, and grow, but the transforming power comes from Him. Tonight, therefore, I do not have to look back over this day merely counting failures. I can also ask where God has been quietly forming Christ in me.
Perhaps I responded more gently than I once would have.
Perhaps I resisted an old temptation.
Perhaps I apologized.
Perhaps I prayed before reacting.
Those may seem like small things, but they are signs of something much larger: God is still working.
Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I come to the end of this day, I thank You that Your purpose for me is greater than simply rescuing me from punishment. You have called me into a life that increasingly reflects Your Son. Forgive me for the moments today when I settled for simply being comfortable instead of becoming more Christlike. Where impatience, pride, selfishness, or fear appeared in me, show me what still needs Your transforming grace. Thank You that You do not abandon the work You begin. Continue shaping my character so that what pleases You becomes increasingly natural in me.
Jesus the Son, thank You for the cross where my sin was carried and my debt was paid. But tonight I also thank You for Your resurrection and for the new life You give. I do not want merely to admire Your character; I want Your life to be seen in mine. Teach me to love as You loved, forgive as You forgave, serve as You served, and trust the Father as You trusted Him. Where my life still resists Your lordship, gently expose it and help me surrender. Let tomorrow reveal a little more of You in me than today did.
Holy Spirit, search my heart as this day grows quiet. Show me where You were at work even when I did not recognize it. Strengthen what is good, correct what is false, and continue forming the likeness of Christ within me. Where I failed today, lead me toward repentance rather than discouragement. Where I obeyed, guard me from pride. Give me rest tonight with the confidence that transformation does not depend upon my strength alone. Work in me what is pleasing to God, and awaken me tomorrow ready to continue becoming the person Christ has called me to be.
Thought for the Evening
Do not measure salvation only by what Christ rescued you from. Measure it also by the person He is steadily forming you to become.
The cross erased the debt, but redemption did not stop at cancellation. God is still writing Christ’s character into the redeemed life, one surrendered day at a time.
