As the Day Ends
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
As this day closes, it is worth remembering that most of our lives are not lived in dramatic spiritual moments. They are lived in kitchens, workplaces, vehicles, hallways, waiting rooms, conversations, errands, and countless ordinary responsibilities. A. W. Tozer argues that Christians must learn to “sanctify the ordinary” by consecrating the whole of life to Christ and beginning to do everything in His name and for His sake. That may sound simple, but it changes the way we understand discipleship.
We sometimes imagine holiness as something reserved for worship services, prayer closets, mission fields, or moments when we feel unusually close to God. Scripture offers a much broader vision. Paul learned that Christ’s grace was sufficient even in weakness. The Greek word translated “sufficient,” arkei (ἀρκεῖ), carries the sense of being enough, adequate, or completely able to meet the need. Christ does not merely meet us in extraordinary spiritual moments; His grace is sufficient for the ordinary places where most of life actually happens.
Perhaps today included nothing dramatic. You prepared meals, answered messages, worked, cared for someone, endured an irritation, cleaned something, solved a problem, or simply made it through a difficult afternoon. None of those things have to be spiritually meaningless. When they are consciously given to Christ, the ordinary becomes an altar. Paul expressed this beautifully elsewhere: “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). The sacred life is not necessarily a different life. It is the same life lived for a different Master.
Heavenly Father, as this day ends, I give You both the remarkable and the ordinary moments I have lived. Forgive me for the times I treated Your presence as though it belonged only to certain places or activities. Thank You for being present in the routines I barely noticed. Teach me to see tomorrow’s work, conversations, responsibilities, and interruptions as opportunities to honor You. When I feel weak, tired, or inadequate, remind me that Your grace remains sufficient.
Jesus the Son, thank You for entering ordinary human life. You worked, walked dusty roads, ate meals, rested, spoke with neighbors, touched the sick, welcomed children, and transformed common moments through perfect obedience to the Father. Tonight I place my weakness before You. Where I failed today, give me mercy. Where I became discouraged, restore me. Where I served quietly, receive it as worship. Teach me tomorrow to do familiar things in Your name and for Your sake.
Holy Spirit, settle my heart as the day grows quiet. Help me recognize how often You were present in moments I considered unimportant. Consecrate my ordinary life to Christ. Shape my attitudes, motives, words, and habits so that even routine responsibilities reflect the character of Jesus. Give me rest tonight, and when morning comes, awaken me with a renewed awareness that every part of life can belong to God.
Thought for the Evening: Before you sleep, choose one ordinary responsibility awaiting you tomorrow and consciously give it to Christ. Then do it as an act of worship.
The ordinary becomes sacred when Christ becomes the reason we do it.
