As the Day Begins
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14
John did not say that he merely heard reports about Jesus; he said, “We beheld His glory.” The Greek word doxa speaks of splendor, honor, and the visible expression of divine excellence. Certainly, John saw Christ calm storms, multiply bread, heal the sick, and raise the dead. Yet the glory of Jesus was not limited to His miracles. His greatest glory was revealed in the kind of person He was in every circumstance. He was perfect love in a loveless world, complete purity in a corrupt world, and unwavering truth in a world accustomed to deception.
The phrase “only begotten” translates monogenēs, describing Jesus as the unique, one-of-a-kind Son who perfectly reveals the Father. Christ’s glory appeared in His patience with difficult people, tenderness toward the rejected, courage before His enemies, and submission to the Father. Even the cross displayed His glory because divine love was willingly giving itself for sinners. As this day begins, I am reminded that Christlike glory is not found in attracting attention to myself. It is revealed when the character of Jesus becomes visible through the way I speak, respond, forgive, and serve.
The Father, thank You for refusing to remain distant from me. You revealed Your heart by sending Your unique and beloved Son into this world. As I begin this day, help me recognize Your glory in places I might ordinarily overlook—in an opportunity to show patience, in someone who needs encouragement, and in the quiet responsibilities You have placed before me. Keep me from confusing glory with popularity, influence, or human recognition. Let my decisions reflect Your goodness, and teach me to value what receives Your approval more than what attracts the praise of people.
The Son, Jesus Christ, I praise You because Your glory was revealed through grace and truth. You never compromised truth, yet You never used truth as a weapon against those who came to You seeking mercy. You were strong without being harsh, pure without being self-righteous, and humble without surrendering Your divine authority. Form that same character in me today. When I am interrupted, help me respond with patience. When I am misunderstood, keep me gracious. When temptation approaches, strengthen me to choose holiness. May someone see something of Your love through my life.
The Holy Spirit, open my eyes to the glory of Christ and transform me into His likeness. Remind me of His words before I speak carelessly. Restrain me when pride wants recognition, and guide me when I am uncertain how to respond. Produce within me Your fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Fill the ordinary moments of this day with the presence of Jesus. Let His eternal life be expressed through my temporary tasks so that my work, conversations, and relationships quietly direct attention toward Him.
Thought for the Day: Before responding to anyone today, pause and ask, “Will my next words reveal the grace and truth of Jesus?” Christ’s glory becomes visible in everyday life whenever His character governs our conduct.
The world may notice spectacular accomplishments, but God is glorified when the likeness of His Son appears in ordinary people.
