As the Day Begins
“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables.” —2 Peter 1:16
Peter’s words come from an eyewitness who had seen the majesty of Jesus Christ. He was not offering a religious legend or a story polished to impress an audience. The Greek word translated “cunningly devised” is sesophismenoi, related to sophizō, meaning to devise cleverly or craft skillfully. Peter insists that the gospel is not a spiritual trick. The apostles had heard Christ, watched Him, failed Him, encountered Him risen, and staked their lives on the truth they proclaimed.
Yet Satan still works by making truth appear harsh and compromise appear loving. A. W. Tozer warned that the enemy sometimes uses our virtues against us. He may take our desire to be gentle and turn it into fear of speaking; take patience and disguise avoidance beneath it; or take Christian love and detach it from truth. Jesus is certainly the Lamb who surrendered Himself at Calvary, but He is also the Shepherd who protects His sheep. Love without truth becomes sentiment, while truth without love becomes a weapon. Christ calls us to hold both together. As this day begins, we should ask whether our kindness is genuinely Christlike or merely keeping us comfortable.
Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me a faith grounded in Your actions within history rather than in cleverly invented tales. Give me discernment today when falsehood presents itself as kindness and compromise disguises itself as peace. Keep me humble enough to listen, courageous enough to resist evil, and wise enough to recognize when the enemy is attempting to turn a good desire into spiritual weakness.
Jesus the Son, You are both the sacrificial Lamb and the faithful Shepherd. Teach me to resemble You—not the harmless version of You that never confronts sin, but the Savior who speaks truth, receives sinners, protects the vulnerable, and lays down His life for the flock. Govern my words so that I never use truth cruelly, and strengthen my heart so that I never withhold truth fearfully.
Holy Spirit, search my motives and expose every place where comfort has replaced courage. Fill me with holy wisdom so that I can recognize deception before it gains entrance. Produce in me love that is patient but not passive, gentleness that is strong rather than timid, and faithfulness that remains steady under pressure. Guide every conversation and decision today so my life bears clear witness to the living Christ.
Thought for the Day: Before remaining silent in the name of kindness, I will ask whether love requires me to speak the truth gently and courageously.
