As the Day Ends
“How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” —Proverbs 16:16
Proverbs does not say that gold and silver are worthless. It says wisdom and understanding are better. Wealth can purchase comfort, but it cannot tell us what our lives are for. God’s wisdom reaches beneath what we possess and asks who governs the person we are becoming. As this day closes, that question deserves an honest answer: Did I invite God to direct me, or did I merely ask Him to approve decisions I had already made?
A. W. Tozer reminds us that following Christ remains a voluntary surrender. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24). He does not force discipleship upon us, but neither does He disguise its cost. Truth will not bargain with our rebellion. The struggle between flesh and Spirit continues because part of us wants God’s comfort without His authority. Surrender is not losing ourselves to a cruel master; it is entrusting ourselves to the only King wise enough to lead us home. Tonight, we can release the day without defending every choice. We can confess where we resisted, receive mercy, and rest beneath God’s rule in His presence.
Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for carrying me through this day and for offering wisdom more valuable than anything I could earn or possess. I confess that I sometimes ask for Your guidance while quietly protecting my own plans. Search the decisions, desires, and conversations of this day. Show me where pride resisted correction or comfort mattered more than obedience. I surrender those places to You and trust that Your will is always shaped by holiness and love.
Jesus the Son, You did not merely teach surrender; You embodied it, becoming obedient even to death on the cross. Forgive me when I want the blessings of following You without taking up my cross. Thank You for receiving repentant disciples and restoring those who return. Tonight I lay down my need to control outcomes, defend myself, and understand everything. Teach me to follow willingly, confident that the hands guiding me still bear the wounds of Your love.
Holy Spirit, quiet the resistance within me and bring my desires into agreement with the will of God. Where the flesh has pulled me toward impatience, selfishness, or compromise, produce Your fruit in me. Give me wisdom to recognize truth, courage to obey it, and peace when obedience requires waiting. Guard my mind through the night, loosen my grip upon unfinished concerns, and prepare me to awaken with a willing heart. Have Your way in me, not through coercion, but through the joyful surrender of a life increasingly convinced that God’s way is always best.
Thought for the Evening: Before I sleep, I will name one area I have been trying to control and consciously surrender it to God’s wisdom.
