As the Day Ends
“My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” —1 John 3:18
As this day ends, John invites us to examine the distance between what we said and what we did. We may have spoken kindly about compassion, promised to pray, or expressed concern, yet love remained incomplete if we ignored an opportunity to help. The Greek words ergō kai alētheia mean “in deed and in truth.” Christian love is not merely a sincere emotion or a carefully chosen sentence. Love becomes visible when truth takes bodily form through action.
James makes the same point by describing a hungry person who receives a blessing but no food: “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled” (James 2:16). The words sound spiritual, but they provide neither warmth nor nourishment. This does not mean words, prayers, songs, or testimonies are unnecessary. We must continue speaking to people about God and speaking to God about people. The issue is whether our words are connected to a willingness to act. A promise to pray carries greater integrity when we actually pray. An expression of concern gains substance when we telephone, visit, give, forgive, listen, or serve. Deeds give credibility and weight to the words of faith.
Heavenly Father, thank You for every opportunity You placed before me today to express Your love. Forgive me for the times I chose convenient words instead of costly obedience. Search my heart and show me where I spoke more than I served. Teach me to recognize needs without waiting to be noticed or praised. Let my concern become practical kindness.
Jesus the Son, You did not merely speak about love; You touched the untouchable, welcomed the rejected, fed the hungry, and carried the cross. Thank You for loving me through sacrifice. Give me courage to follow Your example when love requires time, patience, humility, forgiveness, or personal inconvenience. Make my promises trustworthy because my actions consistently follow them.
Holy Spirit, bring to mind anyone I neglected, any commitment I forgot, or any kindness I postponed. Do not allow conviction to become vague regret. Guide me toward one specific act of obedience tomorrow. Give my words honesty, my service compassion, and my faith visible expression. As I rest tonight, prepare me to awaken ready to practice the truth I profess.
