As the Day Begins
“Each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.” —1 Corinthians 3:13
Meditation
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 3 are not primarily about how much we accomplish but about the spiritual quality of what we build. Jesus Christ is the only foundation, yet believers must decide what kind of life they will construct upon Him. Some work resembles gold, silver, and precious stones because it grows from faith, obedience, and love. Other work resembles wood, hay, and straw because it is driven by pride, appearance, or personal ambition. The searching fire of Christ will expose not merely what we did, but why we did it.
A. W. Tozer observed a troubling contradiction within the church: people may help govern its affairs while showing little desire to pray or worship. A person can attend meetings, cast votes, approve budgets, and organize programs without ever bowing privately before God. Activity is not necessarily worship, and leadership is not automatically spiritual maturity. This concern speaks especially to Christian men who may readily accept responsibility while quietly surrendering prayer to others. God does not first call us to manage His church; He calls us to know, worship, and obey Him. What the church needs most is not greater performance but believers whose public service grows from private communion with God.
Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, I begin this day acknowledging that everything I build will eventually be examined in Your holy light. Forgive me for the times I have substituted activity for intimacy, responsibility for reverence, or outward usefulness for inward surrender. Teach me to worship You before I attempt to work for You. Purify my motives so that what I do today will arise from love, gratitude, and obedience rather than pride or the desire to be noticed. Make my life an offering that honors You.
Jesus the Son, You are the only foundation upon which a lasting life can be built. Keep me from constructing my day upon ambition, applause, convenience, or self-reliance. You withdrew from crowds to pray, sought the Father before making decisions, and remained obedient even when obedience led to the cross. Shape that same devotion within me. Let my words, decisions, and service reflect Your character. When I am tempted merely to appear spiritual, draw me back to the quiet place where I can be honest before You.
Holy Spirit, awaken genuine worship within me today. Search the motives I cannot see clearly and expose whatever would become wood, hay, or straw before Christ. Give me courage to pray when I feel distracted, to listen when I would rather speak, and to obey when obedience costs something. Fill my service with spiritual joy rather than empty routine. Let every task become worship and every responsibility become an opportunity to reveal the life of Christ within me.
Thought for the Day
Before attending another meeting, making another decision, or beginning another ministry task, spend a few quiet minutes worshiping God. Ask Him to examine both your work and your reason for doing it. A life that will survive the fire is built in the hidden place of prayer before it is displayed in public service.
