As the Day Ends
“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.” —Isaiah 40:8
The Bible is unlike any other book because its Author remains present whenever it is read. We can study its language, history, and literary structure, yet still miss the voice of God if we approach it with a resistant heart. Paul explained, “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:14). Scripture requires more than intelligence; it requires spiritual receptivity. We do not master the Bible as though it were merely an object of study. We humbly place ourselves beneath its authority and allow God’s Word to examine us.
A. W. Tozer observed that the impenitent reader may find in Scripture “a skeleton of facts without flesh or life or breath.” The problem is not that God’s Word lacks life, but that pride can make the heart unwilling to receive it. Psalm 25:14 declares, “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him.” This “fear” is reverent surrender—the willingness to listen, believe, and obey. As this day ends, we can ask God to quiet our assumptions and illuminate His Word. The Bible opens most clearly when we approach it not merely asking, “What does this mean?” but also, “Lord, what must change in me?”
Triune Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me a Word that does not fade with changing opinions or passing generations. Forgive me for the times I have read Scripture hurriedly, seeking information without seeking You. As I rest tonight, soften my heart and remove any pride, fear, or hidden resistance that keeps me from hearing Your voice. Teach me to receive Your truth with reverence, gratitude, and a willingness to obey.
Son, Lord Jesus, You are the living Word to whom all Scripture points. Open my understanding as You opened the minds of Your disciples. Where I have misunderstood the Father, reveal His heart through Your life, cross, and resurrection. Let Your promises quiet my anxieties and Your commands correct my path. Keep me from reading the Bible merely to confirm what I already believe; lead me into truth that reshapes me into Your likeness.
Holy Spirit, illuminate the written Word as I read it. Give me discernment without pride, conviction without despair, and understanding that produces obedience. Bring remembered Scripture to my mind during the night and prepare me to awaken with truth governing my thoughts. Where the text seems difficult, give me patience. Where it is clear, give me courage to obey. Breathe spiritual life into my reading so that I encounter God rather than collecting facts.

Before sleeping, read one verse slowly and ask, “Lord, what do You want me to receive, believe, and obey?”
