As the Day Begins
“God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” —1 Corinthians 1:27
There is something inside most of us that wants to appear strong. We straighten our shoulders, hide our fears, and tell ourselves that we can handle whatever the day brings. Determination has value, but it makes a poor substitute for dependence upon God. Paul reminds us that God often works through what the world considers weak so that the glory belongs unmistakably to Him. Our weakness is not necessarily an obstacle to God’s work; it may become the very place where His strength is most clearly revealed.
A. W. Tozer warned against placing faith in human confidence: “If my faith, my belief, my confidence are in myself, then they cannot at the same time be resting in God!” That is the spiritual choice before us this morning. We may enter the day relying upon our experience, personality, and willpower, or we may meet God in prayer and place the coming hours in His hands. Faith does not mean refusing to face reality. It means facing reality while resting in the strength of the One who is greater than anything we will face.
Triune Prayer
Father, I begin this day acknowledging that I am not sufficient in myself. Thank You for choosing ordinary, imperfect, and sometimes frightened people through whom to display Your grace. Forgive me for the moments when I have trusted my plans more than Your wisdom or tried to appear strong when I needed to kneel before You. Take every weakness I bring into this morning and make it available for Your purposes. Let my dependence upon You become the quiet strength with which I meet every responsibility.
Son, Lord Jesus, You have never asked me to walk ahead of You or to fight spiritual battles in my own power. You invite me to follow You. When temptation presses against my thoughts or fear begins directing my decisions, turn my attention toward Your victory at the cross. Teach me that courage is not pretending to be invulnerable; it is remaining close to You when I feel inadequate. Walk before me today, and let Your faithful presence become stronger in my awareness than the pressures surrounding me.
Holy Spirit, fill the places where my strength ends. Guide my words, restrain my impulses, and help me recognize the difference between human self-confidence and confidence rooted in God. When I am uncertain, give me wisdom. When I am weary, renew me. When I am tempted to force an outcome, teach me to wait prayerfully. Produce within me the quiet fruit of faith, humility, patience, and obedience so that others encounter the character of Christ through the way I live today.
Thought for the Day
I do not have to prove that I am strong today. I need only remain surrendered to the God whose strength is made visible through my weakness. Before facing the world, I will meet God in prayer and entrust the outcome to Him.
