As the Day Begins
“And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.” —Acts 2:3
Meditation
Acts 2 presents a remarkable meeting between the eternal God and ordinary people. The One who exists beyond time entered their moment. The God who knows all things met each disciple personally, and the One whose holiness cannot be measured placed a visible sign of His presence upon them. The tongues were “like as of fire”—a reminder of the God who appeared to Moses in the burning bush, guided Israel through the wilderness, and revealed His glory in the tabernacle. The fire declared that God had come near without ceasing to be God.
The disciples did not create Pentecost through enthusiasm or effort. They waited in dependence, and God acted according to His promise. Because He is eternal, His purposes cannot expire. Because He is immutable, His character and promises cannot change. Because He is omniscient, He already knows every circumstance we will encounter today. The Holy Spirit who rested upon those disciples now dwells within everyone who belongs to Christ. We may begin this day quietly, but we never begin it alone. God’s unchanging presence gives us courage for an ever-changing world.
Triune Prayer
Father, You are eternal, holy, all-knowing, and unchanging. Before this day began, You were already present within it, and before I encountered its needs, You already understood them. Thank You that I do not have to face an uncertain day with uncertain promises. Forgive me for reducing You to the size of my immediate concerns. Lift my thoughts above my schedule, fears, and limitations so that I may live today with reverence, confidence, and gratitude before You.
Son, You have shown me what the invisible God is like. Through Your life, sacrifice, and resurrection, I see the Father’s holiness joined with mercy and His righteousness joined with redeeming love. Thank You for making it possible for me to draw near to God without fear. Guide my words and conduct today so that others may recognize something of Your patience, compassion, courage, and truth in me. Keep me from seeking attention for myself, and let my life quietly direct attention toward You.
Holy Spirit, You came upon the disciples like fire and gave them power to speak, serve, and bear witness to Christ. Kindle within me a renewed love for God and a faithful concern for the people I meet today. Burn away resentment, pride, distraction, and spiritual indifference. Give me wisdom when I must decide, restraint when I am tempted to react, and boldness when I have an opportunity to speak of Jesus. Fill me so completely that my ordinary responsibilities become places where Your presence is made known.
Thought for the Day
I will enter today remembering that the eternal God is already there. When circumstances change, I will trust His unchanging character. When I feel inadequate, I will depend upon the Holy Spirit rather than my own strength. I do not need to manufacture God’s presence; I need to recognize it, welcome it, and walk faithfully within it.
