As the Day Begins
“For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.” —Romans 14:18
Romans 14 reminds us that God’s kingdom is not built upon food, drink, or personal preference, but upon “righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17). Paul is addressing disagreements over matters of conscience, yet he refuses to make obedience itself optional. Christians may reach different conclusions about disputable practices, but none of us is free to dismiss God’s clear call to holiness.
The Greek word translated “serveth” is douleuō, describing devoted service to a master. We do not merely consult Christ as though He were one voice among many; we belong to Him. The word “acceptable,” euarestos, means well-pleasing. This gives us a worthy purpose for the coming day: not merely to satisfy ourselves or impress others, but to live in a manner pleasing to God. Holiness is not spiritual decoration added to an already busy life; it is the shape Christ gives to a surrendered life.
The Father, You are holy, righteous, and merciful in everything You do. Thank You for receiving me as Your child and for giving me Your Word to guide my life. Forgive me for those times when I have treated Your commands as suggestions to be accepted or rejected according to my convenience. As I begin this day, teach me to desire what pleases You. Help me distinguish between Your unchanging truth and my personal preferences so that I neither excuse disobedience nor burden others with rules You have not given. Let righteousness, peace, and joy mark my conduct today.
The Son, Lord Jesus, You did not call me merely to admire You but to follow You. Thank You for bearing my sins upon the Cross and giving me a new life that can be lived for God. When obedience becomes inconvenient, strengthen me to remember the price of my redemption. Guard me from a divided heart that calls You Lord while reserving the right to choose which teachings I will obey. Make my words gracious, my motives pure, and my actions consistent with Your character. May those who encounter me today recognize something of Your patience, truth, and compassion.
The Holy Spirit, dwell powerfully within me throughout this day. Reveal the attitudes, habits, and hidden compromises that do not reflect the holiness of God. Give me conviction without self-righteousness, courage without harshness, and humility without weakness. Produce in me the righteousness, peace, and joy that identify the kingdom of God. When I am tempted to follow my feelings instead of Scripture, remind me that true freedom is found in obedience. Guide every decision, conversation, and response so that my life becomes an offering pleasing to God.
Thought for the Day
Before making a decision today, pause and ask, “Will this choice please Christ and reflect His character?” Then follow the clearest teaching of Scripture with humility and love. I may have preferences about many things, but obedience to Christ is not one of them.
