As the Day Begins
“Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.” —Psalm 57:5
Life begins to lose its proper order whenever I place myself at its center. The temptation did not begin with me; it reaches back to Eden, where Adam and Eve chose personal desire over the authority of their Creator. Sin reversed the proper relationship between God and humanity. The creature sought the throne, and the Creator’s voice was pushed aside. Yet the happiness humanity sought through independence could only be found through fellowship with God.
Jesus came to restore what sin had broken. Through His atoning blood, He makes reconciliation with God possible; through the Holy Spirit, that restored relationship becomes a living experience within us. The Hebrew word translated “exalted,” rûm, means to be lifted high or raised above everything else. David’s prayer is therefore more than praise—it is the surrender of life’s highest place to God. Spiritual victory begins when God is not merely included in my plans but exalted above them.
A Triune Prayer
Heavenly Father, I begin this day by acknowledging that You are my Creator, my Sustainer, and the rightful center of my life. Forgive me for the times I have arranged my days around my desires and then asked You to bless what I had already decided. Be exalted above my ambitions, anxieties, relationships, possessions, and plans. Teach me the freedom of living as Your creature and beloved child. May every choice I make today reflect my trust in Your wisdom and my gratitude for Your faithful care.
Jesus the Son, thank You for restoring the relationship that sin destroyed. Through Your blood, I am forgiven; through Your righteousness, I may stand before the Father without fear. Keep the cross before me today whenever pride urges me to exalt myself. Let Your humility shape my conversations, Your compassion direct my response to others, and Your obedience become the pattern for my decisions. May people see something of Your character in the way I speak, serve, forgive, and love.
Holy Spirit, awaken my heart to the presence and glory of God throughout this day. Reveal any thought, attitude, or desire that attempts to take the place belonging to Him. When distractions pull me away, gently return my attention to the Father. When temptation approaches, strengthen me to choose obedience. When opportunities to serve arise, make me attentive and willing. Fill me so completely that honoring God becomes more than an intention—it becomes the living direction of my heart.
Thought for the Day
Before beginning each major task today, pause and pray, “Be Thou exalted, O God.” Then ask whether your words, choices, and motives will place God at the center or move self toward the throne. The properly ordered Christian life does not begin by asking God to follow us; it begins by surrendering ourselves to follow Him. When God occupies His rightful place, our responsibilities, relationships, and desires begin to find theirs.
