As the Day Begins
“But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” —2 Corinthians 3:18
Paul reminds us that spiritual formation is taking place whether we notice it or not. The Greek verb metamorphoumetha, translated “are changed,” describes an ongoing transformation from within. Our character is gradually shaped by whatever consistently receives our attention, admiration, and affection. A. W. Tozer warned that people are “molded by their affinities, shaped by their affections and powerfully transformed by the artistry of their loves.” What fills my vision will eventually influence my values, choices, and conduct.
This is why God directs me toward His righteousness, wisdom, and truth. These are not abstract religious ideals; they reveal the character of the God I love. Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Therefore, loving truth means loving Christ, while cherishing righteousness trains my heart to reject sin. As I behold the Lord through Scripture, prayer, and obedience, the Holy Spirit patiently shapes me into Christ’s likeness “from glory to glory.” Transformation does not begin with trying harder to appear Christian; it begins with looking longer and more lovingly at Christ.
Triune Prayer
Father, thank You for creating me with the capacity to love, admire, and become devoted to what is good. Forgive me for allowing lesser things to occupy the place that belongs to You. Direct my attention toward Your righteousness, wisdom, holiness, and truth today. Teach me to recognize what is shaping my thoughts and to choose influences that draw my heart closer to You.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the perfect revelation of truth and righteousness. Fix my spiritual vision upon You. When competing desires seek my affection, remind me that nothing can compare with knowing You. Let Your compassion guide my relationships, Your purity govern my decisions, and Your obedience shape my response to the Father. May others see something of Your gracious character developing in me.
Holy Spirit, continue Your transforming work within my heart. Reveal the habits, images, voices, and desires that are molding me away from Christ. Give me discernment to reject what corrupts and grace to embrace what strengthens faith. As I behold the glory of the Lord in Scripture, change my thinking, refine my affections, and carry me another step toward Christlikeness today.
Thought for the Day: I will examine what receives my attention and deliberately turn my heart toward Christ, because what I consistently behold is shaping who I am becoming.
