As the Day Ends
“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.” —Proverbs 15:26
Words do not remain quietly on a page. They enter the imagination, influence our judgments, and sometimes provide language for desires that were previously unformed. Proverbs 15:26 contrasts corrupt intentions with “pleasant words.” The Hebrew expression imrē-noʿam describes words characterized by graciousness, beauty, and moral goodness. Scripture is not teaching us to fear every difficult subject or avoid literature portraying human evil. The Bible itself speaks honestly about betrayal, violence, lust, injustice, and grief. The issue is whether words expose darkness truthfully or invite us to admire it.
A. W. Tozer compared harmful literature entering the home with someone tracking dirt across a clean floor. We should therefore exercise discernment concerning books, magazines, websites, entertainment, and social media. Whatever repeatedly enters the mind eventually begins furnishing the inner life. Christian homes should welcome writing that strengthens wisdom, awakens compassion, encourages truth, and helps readers recognize both human brokenness and God’s grace. Our responsibility is not merely to prohibit unhealthy influences but to cultivate an appetite for what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8).
Triune Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of language and for revealing Yourself through the written Word. Forgive me for carelessly allowing words, images, and ideas to enter my mind without spiritual examination. Give me wisdom to recognize what nourishes faith and what quietly weakens it. Help me make my home a place where truth is welcomed, wisdom is treasured, and conversations reflect Your gracious character.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the living Word, full of grace and truth. Purify my imagination and teach me to love what reflects Your goodness. Guard me from pride that mistakes indiscriminate acceptance for maturity. At the same time, keep me from becoming fearful, harsh, or self-righteous. Let my words be pleasant in the biblical sense—honest enough to confront sin and gracious enough to lead others toward redemption.
Holy Spirit, examine what I have read, watched, heard, and repeated today. Show me anything that should not be given a permanent place within my heart. Renew my mind through Scripture and sharpen my discernment without hardening my spirit. Guide parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers as they help younger minds develop wisdom. Tonight, quiet every corrupting voice and let the words of Christ dwell richly within me.
Thought for the Evening: Before I welcome another voice into my home or heart, I will ask whether it helps me recognize truth, resist sin, and love Christ more faithfully.
