When Fear Looks Up

As the Day Begins

“Look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” — Luke 21:28

The world awakens each morning beneath a cloud of uncertainty. News of violence, illness, loss, and instability can make fear seem reasonable—even unavoidable. Jesus did not deny that frightening events would come. In Luke 21, He prepared His disciples for turmoil, persecution, and upheaval. Yet His command was neither “panic” nor “hide.” He said, “Look up.” The Greek word anakyptō describes straightening oneself after being bent over. Fear forces the soul downward, but hope in Christ enables us to stand upright again.

Jesus also spoke of approaching “redemption,” translating the Greek apolytrōsis, which conveys liberation or release. Our confidence does not rest in the expectation that nothing painful will happen. It rests in the assurance that nothing can cancel God’s redeeming purpose. A frightened world does not need Christians who pretend danger is unreal. It needs believers who face reality while remaining anchored in Christ. Calm faith becomes a testimony that the cross still offers peace, the empty tomb still declares victory, and our returning Lord still holds the future.

Triune Prayer

Father, I begin this day acknowledging that You remain sovereign over everything I will encounter. When troubling circumstances tempt me to bend beneath the weight of fear, help me lift my head and remember that my life rests securely in Your hands. Thank You for revealing enough of Your purposes in Scripture to assure me that history is not wandering without direction. Give me a quiet heart, clear judgment, and the courage to trust You even when I cannot see what lies ahead.

Lord Jesus, thank You for speaking honestly about suffering while giving me a hope stronger than suffering. You entered a fearful world, endured the cross, conquered death, and promised to return. Teach me to live today as one who has been redeemed. Keep me from spreading anxiety through careless words or fearful reactions. Let my conduct show others that peace is found not in favorable circumstances but in knowing You. Help me offer compassion to frightened people without becoming controlled by their fear.

Holy Spirit, steady my thoughts and govern my emotions throughout this day. Bring the promises of Scripture to my remembrance whenever alarming voices compete for my attention. Give me discernment to distinguish responsible concern from paralyzing fear. Fill me with hope that is neither shallow nor artificial, but rooted in the character of God. Through my words, expressions, and decisions, make me a calm and faithful witness to the security found in Christ.

Thought for the Day

When fear tries to make me bow my head, I will deliberately look toward Christ. Today I will pause before reacting to troubling information, remember that God remains sovereign, and speak one word of hope to someone who may be afraid. Christian courage does not ignore the storm; it faces the storm while trusting the One who commands the wind and waves.
