Counsel That Has First Heard God

As the Day Ends

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkens unto counsel is wise.” — Proverbs 12:15

Advice surrounds us, but abundance does not guarantee wisdom. The biblical fool is not simply uninformed; he is convinced that his own judgment requires no correction. The Hebrew word shāmaʿ, translated “hearkeneth,” means to hear with the intention of responding. A wise person therefore does more than collect opinions. He listens humbly, tests counsel against God’s Word, and remains willing to change direction. Good counsel does not merely confirm what I already want; it helps me recognize what God desires.

Those offering advice carry responsibility as well. A person should not presume to speak for God without first listening to Him. Experience, confidence, and sincerity cannot substitute for biblical wisdom. Psalm 1 warns against walking in ungodly counsel because advice gradually shapes direction, habits, and character. As this day ends, I should ask whose voices have influenced me and where their guidance is leading. Wise counselors will not make me dependent upon them; they will direct me toward Scripture, prayer, obedience, and Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for not leaving me without guidance. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own perspective or accepted advice merely because it agreed with my desires. Give me humility to receive correction and discernment to distinguish wisdom from confident opinion. Teach me to seek counselors who reverence You, understand Your Word, and care more about my faithfulness than my approval.

Jesus the Son, You are my Wonderful Counselor and the perfect revelation of the Father. Quiet the competing voices within me and help me hear Your call clearly. When fear, pride, or impatience urges me toward an easy decision, remind me of Your example of prayerful obedience. Lead me along the path of truth, and make my life responsive to Your authority.

Holy Spirit, search the counsel I received today and expose anything contrary to Scripture. Guard young and inexperienced hearts from persuasive voices that lead away from Christ. When others seek my advice, keep me from speaking hastily or pretending to possess wisdom I have not received from You. Teach me first to listen, then to speak with truth, restraint, compassion, and grace. Grant me peaceful rest beneath Your faithful guidance tonight.
