As the Day Begins
“God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.” — Psalm 89:7
Psalm 89 pictures heaven itself standing in awe before God. The Hebrew word translated “feared,” ‘arats, carries the sense of being overwhelmed by majestic greatness. Reverence is not terror that drives us away from God; it is holy wonder that draws us near with humility. When believers gather for worship, we are doing more than attending a familiar weekly meeting. We are entering the assembly of the redeemed to acknowledge the presence of the King of kings.
Our outward behavior often reveals our inward awareness. Conversation and laughter are not enemies of worship, but thoughtlessness can follow us into the sanctuary. Our minds may wander toward unfinished work, family concerns, lunch plans, or the week ahead. Reverence begins when we deliberately remember whom we have come to meet. We prepare for worship by turning our attention from ourselves toward the worthiness of God. This morning, whether I worship in a sanctuary, at home, or while beginning my daily responsibilities, I can quiet my heart and say, “Speak, Lord; thy servant heareth.”
Father, I come before You grateful that You welcome me into Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have approached worship casually, allowing distractions to occupy the attention that belongs to You. Teach me to recognize Your holiness without forgetting Your fatherly love. Quiet the restless thoughts within me, correct every unworthy attitude, and give me a heart that listens before it speaks. May my conduct today reflect that I have been in the presence of the King.
Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for opening the way into the presence of God through Your sacrifice. I could never make myself worthy to approach the throne, yet Your righteousness covers me and Your grace welcomes me. Guard me from empty religious habits and awaken within me a sincere desire to honor You. Help me carry the spirit of worship beyond the church building so that my words, decisions, and treatment of others reveal that You are truly my Lord.
Holy Spirit, search my heart and reveal every distracting, careless, or prideful attitude. Gather my wandering thoughts and direct them toward the beauty of Christ. Give me attentiveness when Scripture is read, humility when correction is needed, and readiness when obedience is required. Make reverence more than an outward appearance; cultivate within me a holy awareness of Your presence throughout this day. Tune my heart so that even ordinary duties become acts of worship offered gladly to God.

Before entering any conversation, responsibility, or place of worship today, pause briefly and remember whose presence you carry. Reverence begins when I deliberately turn my full attention toward God.
