As the Day Ends
“Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:16
Paul does not merely ask the Lord to send peace; he calls Jesus Christ “the Lord of peace.” Peace belongs to His character and flows from His presence. The Greek word eirēnē describes more than quiet surroundings. It carries the sense of wholeness, harmony, and well-being. Paul adds dia pantos en panti tropō—“continually in every way.” The promise is not that every problem disappears tonight, but that Christ can establish His peace within us through every kind of circumstance.
Sin leaves the heart divided. We want obedience yet resist surrender; we desire rest while rehearsing our fears. Redemption restores the life disordered by sin and gradually brings our thoughts, desires, and actions into harmony with God. A. W. Tozer described conversion as a spiritual “tuning-up,” like an instrument brought back into alignment with its proper note. Peace comes as every part of life is brought under the gracious rule of Christ. Tonight I do not have to resolve every tension. I can place my divided heart in the hands of the One who knows how to restore it.
Father, I thank You for sustaining me through this day and welcoming me into Your presence tonight. Some parts of my life feel settled, while others remain strained and uncertain. Forgive the attitudes, words, and decisions that moved me away from Your will. Bring my thoughts, desires, and relationships into harmony with Your holy character. Where I have tried to create peace through control, teach me to trust Your wisdom. Receive every unfinished concern and grant me the quiet confidence that I remain safely within Your care.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Lord of peace, and I rest in what You accomplished for me through the cross. Thank You for reconciling me to God when sin had made me His enemy. Gather the scattered pieces of my attention and fix my heart upon You. Where guilt accuses me, remind me of Your forgiveness. Where fear unsettles me, remind me of Your authority. Where weariness weakens me, let Your sufficient grace become my strength. Rule within me so that Your peace shapes how I rest tonight and how I rise tomorrow.
Holy Spirit, examine the hidden tensions within me and gently bring them into the light. Quiet the thoughts that continue racing after the day has ended. Teach me what must be confessed, what must be released, and what must simply be entrusted to God. Restore spiritual balance where worry, disappointment, or desire has pulled my heart away from Christ. Fill me with holy peace, keep me receptive to Your guidance, and use tonight’s rest to renew my mind, body, and spirit for faithful service.
