As the Day Begins
“But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” — 1 Corinthians 1:23
People awaken each morning hungry for something. Some hunger for knowledge, hoping that learning will make life meaningful. Others seek recognition, financial security, entertainment, or influence. Still others have stopped seeking anything beyond immediate comfort. Yet there remains another kind of person: the God-hungry soul who knows that nothing created can satisfy a heart made for its Creator.
Paul declared that the answer to this hunger is “Christ crucified.” The message of the cross offended those who expected impressive power and disappointed those who demanded sophisticated wisdom. Yet what appeared weak was God’s saving strength, and what appeared foolish was God’s wisdom. The hungry soul eventually discovers that Christ is not one interest among many; He is the bread without which the spirit starves.
A. W. Tozer described seekers after God as people possessing an “insatiable thirst after the Source of their being.” That thirst does not mean they are naturally better than others. It means grace has awakened them to their need. Like someone smelling bread after a long fast, they have begun to recognize where life is found.
God-hunger is more than religious curiosity. It is the heart crying with the psalmist, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:2). When I bring that hunger to the cross, I find that God has already moved toward me. Christ gave Himself so that I might be forgiven, reconciled, and filled with a life the world cannot manufacture.
Father, I thank You for creating me with a soul that cannot be satisfied apart from You. Forgive me for trying to quiet my spiritual hunger with possessions, praise, information, or activity. Awaken in me a stronger desire for Your presence. Direct my thoughts today so that I seek first Your kingdom and recognize every good gift as coming from Your hand.
Jesus Christ, I come again to Your cross. What the world considers weakness is the power by which You rescued me. Thank You for loving me when I was wandering and for giving Yourself for my sins. Keep me from being ashamed of the gospel. Let my choices, conversations, and conduct show that You are the One for whom my soul has been searching.
Holy Spirit, stir within me a holy appetite for truth, prayer, worship, and obedience. When lesser desires begin to control me, turn my attention toward Christ. Help me recognize the difference between temporary excitement and genuine spiritual life. Fill me so completely that my hunger for God becomes compassion for others who are still searching.
Thought for the Day: Before reaching for something to occupy your mind this morning, spend a few quiet minutes with Christ crucified and ask, “Lord, what does my soul truly hunger for today?”
