As the Day Begins
“Peter and John replied, ‘Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.’” — Acts 4:19–20
Morning Meditation
Peter and John were not naturally fearless men. Peter had previously denied knowing Jesus when fear overtook him. Yet after witnessing the risen Christ and receiving the Holy Spirit, these disciples could no longer remain silent. Their courage did not arise from an argumentative personality or a desire to attract attention. They spoke because Jesus had become too real to conceal. They had seen His power, heard His teaching, received His forgiveness, and witnessed His victory over death.
Christian prudence teaches us when and how to speak, but fear tempts us never to speak at all. There is a difference between gracious restraint and guilty silence. We do not honor Christ through angry arguments, yet neither do we honor Him by hiding our faith whenever His truth becomes uncomfortable. Christian courage is not speaking the loudest; it is faithfully saying what needs to be said with truth, humility, and love. As this day begins, I should ask whether my words and conduct will quietly acknowledge Jesus or leave those around me with no reason to know that I belong to Him.
Triune Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me another day in which to know You and make Your goodness known. Forgive me for the occasions when fear of criticism has mattered more to me than faithfulness to You. Give me wisdom to recognize when silence is appropriate and when silence becomes disobedience. Let my words arise from love rather than pride and help me care more about Your approval than the acceptance of others.
Jesus, You openly spoke the truth, yet You never used truth as a weapon to satisfy personal anger. You restored the broken, confronted hypocrisy, welcomed sinners, and remained obedient even when faithfulness led You to the cross. Give me courage to confess You without embarrassment and compassion to represent You without harshness. May people recognize not merely my opinions, but Your grace and character in me.
Holy Spirit, fill me as You filled the disciples who once trembled behind closed doors. Guard my tongue from careless, self-righteous, or unnecessary words, but do not let fear silence the testimony You have entrusted to me. Remind me of what Christ has done, guide me toward those who need encouragement, and give me the right words at the right moment. Make my life and speech agree.
Thought for the Day
Before this day ends, I will look for one natural opportunity to speak truthfully about what Christ has done for me. I will not force the conversation or attempt to win an argument. I will simply refuse to hide the hope God has given me.
Acts 4:19–20 teaches that faithful Christian witness places obedience to God above fear of human disapproval. Believers overcome guilty silence by remembering what they have experienced through Christ, depending upon the Holy Spirit, and speaking with both courage and grace. The world does not need a louder version of our anger; it needs a clearer witness to Jesus.
