As the Day Ends
“It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.” — 1 Peter 3:21–22
As this day ends, Peter directs our attention to the risen and exalted Christ. Jesus is not merely a gentle teacher whose words may be adjusted to suit our preferences. He suffered for sins, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and now reigns at the Father’s right hand. Angels, authorities, and powers are subject to Him. Because Christ possesses such authority, we do not have permission to soften His words while claiming to speak in His name. We receive Him as He has revealed Himself—Savior, Lord, and reigning King.
The invitation of Jesus includes peace, forgiveness, and rest, but it also includes repentance, obedience, holiness, sacrifice, and a cross. Christ does not promise that following Him will make every earthly circumstance comfortable. He calls us to lose our lives in order to find them, to love enemies, to forgive offenders, and to place His kingdom above our preferences. Grace does not lower Christ’s call; grace enables us to answer it. Tonight we can rest, not because discipleship asks nothing from us, but because the One who calls us has conquered death and supplies the strength to follow.
Triune Prayer
Father, as I look back upon this day, I confess the times when I wanted the comfort of faith without the obedience faith requires. Forgive me when I have reshaped Your truth to fit my desires or avoided words of Scripture that challenged my habits. Thank You for sending Your Son to save me from sin rather than merely make sin more comfortable. Give me humility to receive Your Word as truth and courage to obey when faithfulness costs me convenience, approval, or control.
Lord Jesus, You carried the cross before calling me to follow You. You suffered for sins, rose in victory, ascended into heaven, and now reign over every authority and power. Keep me from reducing You to a source of inspiration or earthly happiness. Let me see both the tenderness of Your mercy and the rightful authority of Your lordship. Teach me to love You for who You are, to trust what You say, and to surrender whatever competes with Your rule in my heart.
Holy Spirit, search me during the quiet of this evening. Reveal where I have softened Christ’s commands, excused disobedience, or spoken of Him in ways that conceal the cost of discipleship. Strengthen me where I am weak and correct me without allowing shame to drive me away from grace. Form Christ’s holiness within me. As I sleep, renew my mind so that I may awaken ready to speak truth with love, bear my cross faithfully, and live beneath the joyful authority of Jesus.
Thought for the Evening
Before sleeping, identify one teaching of Jesus that you have been tempted to soften or avoid. Place that area honestly before Him, receive His mercy, and ask for strength to obey tomorrow. The risen Christ who commands your life is also the faithful Savior who carries you.
First Peter 3:21–22 presents Jesus Christ as resurrected, ascended, and reigning over every spiritual authority. Christian discipleship therefore rests not upon a modified message of comfort, but upon faithful submission to the crucified and victorious Lord.
