As the Day Begins
“You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” —1 Corinthians 6:20
Many of us readily confess that human beings are sinful, yet we may still hesitate to admit how thoroughly we depend upon God. As A. W. Tozer observed, it is possible to believe strongly in human depravity while remaining remarkably proud. We acknowledge weakness as a theological doctrine but continue arranging our lives as though determination, intelligence, experience, or discipline can produce spiritual victory. We ask God to strengthen plans that we have already made instead of surrendering ourselves to His direction.
Paul reminds us that we do not belong to ourselves. We were “bought at a price”—the life of Jesus Christ given for us. Therefore, glorifying God is not confined to what happens during worship. The Greek verb doxazō, translated “glorify” or “honor,” describes making God’s character visible through the way we live. Our bodies, choices, relationships, habits, and responses belong within His redemptive work. Victory begins when self-reliance gives way to active trust in God. Yielding to the Holy Spirit is not spiritual passivity. It is allowing Him to expose our weakness, direct our decisions, and form the character of Christ within us.
Triune Prayer
Father, I begin this day acknowledging that I belong to You. Forgive me for the ways I have trusted my own judgment while only asking You to approve what I had already decided. Thank You for loving me enough to reveal both my weakness and Your sufficiency. Teach me to receive this day as a gift entrusted to me. May my words, physical strength, decisions, and relationships bring honor to You. When pride urges me to prove myself, remind me that my security rests in being Your child.
Lord Jesus, You paid the price that I could never pay and won the victory that I could never win for myself. Thank You for meeting me in my sin without leaving me there. Help me remember that I do not need to earn Your affection through achievement or religious activity. Let Your obedience shape mine and Your humility silence my pride. When temptation comes, teach me to depend upon Your strength. May the life I live today display the freedom, mercy, and new direction You secured for me through the cross.
Holy Spirit, reveal every place where I am quietly depending upon myself instead of trusting You. Give me spiritual sight to recognize pride even when it disguises itself as competence, caution, or independence. Direct my thoughts before they become words and my desires before they become actions. Produce within me the patience, courage, purity, and self-control that I cannot manufacture by willpower alone. I open my plans, conversations, responsibilities, and interruptions to Your guidance. Demonstrate the victory of God through a life that is yielded to Your presence.
Thought for the Day
Before beginning each responsibility today, pause long enough to pray, “Holy Spirit, help me honor God in this.” Let that brief surrender remind you that spiritual victory does not come from trying harder in isolation. The life that glorifies God is the life that consciously belongs to God.
First Corinthians 6:20 teaches that Christian stewardship includes the whole person. Because Christ has redeemed us, our everyday bodily choices become opportunities to honor God. Depending upon the Holy Spirit enables believers to resist pride, practice faithful obedience, and experience Christ’s victory in ordinary life.
