As the Day Begins
“As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.” —2 Corinthians 6:1
God’s grace comes to us as a gift, but it is never meant to pass through our lives without changing us. Paul had just proclaimed that God reconciled sinners to Himself through Christ and entrusted believers with the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, when he warns us not to receive God’s grace “in vain,” he is not suggesting that grace is insufficient. He is warning against hearing the gospel without allowing it to produce repentance, faith, obedience, and a transformed life.
A person does not gradually drift into discipleship through familiarity with Christian customs. We may attend worship, appreciate Scripture, admire Jesus, and surround ourselves with faithful people while continuing to resist His call. Salvation begins with God’s initiative, but grace summons us to respond. God’s grace is freely given, yet receiving it faithfully means entrusting ourselves to Jesus Christ.
This morning, the Lord places a decision before us. Will we merely know about His grace, or will we live within it? That decision is not limited to the moment of conversion. Every new day asks whether we will follow Christ in our attitudes, conversations, choices, and treatment of others. Grace does not leave us where it finds us. It forgives us, restores us, and then teaches us to walk in a new way.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for reaching toward me before I ever knew how to reach toward You. Your grace is not a reward for my goodness but the expression of Your loving character. Forgive me for the times I have heard Your Word without responding or received Your kindness without allowing it to change my conduct. Awaken my heart this morning. Help me recognize the decisions through which my faith must become visible. Give me courage to answer Your grace with repentance, trust, gratitude, and obedience.
Jesus the Son, thank You for accomplishing the reconciliation I could never accomplish for myself. You did not merely speak about grace; You carried my sin to the cross and opened the way for me to return to God. Keep me from treating Your sacrifice as something familiar or ordinary. Let my choices today reflect that I belong to You. When obedience is inconvenient, strengthen me. When another path appears easier, remind me that following You leads to life.
Holy Spirit, search the places where I have postponed obedience or settled for outward religion without inward surrender. Illuminate the truth of Scripture and reveal any decision I need to make today. Guard me from assuming that yesterday’s faithfulness is sufficient for today’s calling. Fill me with wisdom, conviction, and willing trust. Let Your fruit be evident in my words and actions so that the grace I have received will not remain unexpressed.
Thought for the Day: God’s grace has already taken the first step toward me. Today I will answer that grace by choosing one area in which belief must become obedience.
