As the Day Ends
“They are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words.” — 1 Timothy 6:4 (NIV) (Bible Gateway)
At day’s end, I can usually remember a conversation in which I wanted to be understood. Sometimes I also remember how strongly I wanted to have the last word. Paul’s warning to Timothy concerns teachers whose quarrels produce envy, strife, and suspicion. He asks us to consider the fruit of our speech. A person can know the right terms and still use them in a way that damages trust. Truth belongs in a humble heart and in words that serve the people who hear them. (Bible Gateway)
A. W. Tozer’s warning about pride in theological learning is worth hearing personally. Study is a gift to the church; we need people who read carefully and teach faithfully. But learning can become a way to seek admiration. Paul gives us a question for our evening reflection: Did my words today help someone understand Christ, or did I mainly want them to notice what I knew? Another of his letters says that “knowledge puffs up while love builds up.” We can bring both our learning and our desire to be right before God tonight, asking Him to teach us wisdom that loves. Prayer to the Father
Heavenly Father, thank You for every opportunity I had today to learn, speak, and listen. I confess the moments when pride entered my words or when I judged someone before hearing them fully. You know the conversations I keep replaying tonight. Help me see my part in them honestly and receive Your mercy. If I need to apologize, give me the humility to do it. Let me rest in Your care rather than trying to settle every disagreement before I sleep.
Prayer to the Son
Jesus the Son, Your teaching gives me truth to hold and a life to follow. Thank You for receiving people who come to You with questions. Where I have used what I know to feel above another person, call me back to Your way. Teach me to speak clearly without trying to win admiration, and to correct with patience when correction is needed. As this day closes, help me lay down the wish to have the last word and trust You with what remains unfinished.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, examine my heart gently and faithfully. Bring to mind anything I should address tomorrow, and quiet the thoughts that only lead me through the same argument again. Grow in me a willingness to listen, a love for Scripture, and a concern for the people my words may affect. Thank You for continuing Your work in me when the day is over. Guide my learning toward service, and grant me peaceful rest tonight.
Thought for the Evening: Recall one conversation from today. Thank God for what you learned, and consider whether someone needs a kinder word from you tomorrow.
