As the Day Ends
“Faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect.” — James 2:22, KJV
As this day comes to a close, we might remember a kind word we offered, a need we noticed, or an opportunity to help that passed us by. James invites us to look at such moments with honesty and hope. Speaking of Abraham, he describes faith working together with action. Abraham’s deeds did not replace his trust in God; they gave that trust expression. A. W. Tozer compares faith and conduct to a tree and its fruit. The fruit grows because the tree is alive. In the same way, acts of love grow from a life that trusts Christ. We need not spend the evening counting good deeds to prove our worth. We can ask whether the faith we profess is becoming visible in the way we care for others.
Tozer also asks us to consider a tender possibility: sometimes we say we will pray for someone when we are able to help meet the need before us. Prayer is a gift we can offer sincerely, and it may lead us to see what action is ours to take. John urges believers to love “in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18, KJV). Perhaps today you prayed and then made the call, shared a meal, or stayed to listen. Give thanks for the grace that moved you. Perhaps you meant to help but did not. You can speak to God about that without hiding or despairing. Tomorrow may bring a fresh opportunity to join your prayer with a practical act of care.
Father, thank You for every person who showed me kindness today, including those whose quiet service I may have overlooked. You have met needs in my life through the hands and attention of others. As I remember the people I encountered, help me see them as people You love rather than as interruptions to my plans. Where I offered a promise of help I did not keep, give me honesty to acknowledge it and wisdom to make it right. Where I did what I could, help me receive rest tonight without believing that every need depends upon me.
Jesus the Son, thank You for showing me what love looks like in action. You welcomed people who called out for help, gave Your attention to those others hurried past, and gave Yourself for us. I confess that I sometimes prefer the idea of serving to the inconvenience of doing it. Teach me to follow You in the ordinary places where a kind word, a visit, or a shared resource can lighten someone’s burden. Keep my faith close to Your grace, so that my actions arise from love rather than a desire to be admired.
Holy Spirit, search my heart gently as this day ends. Bring to mind a need I can respond to faithfully, and help me discern what belongs to me and what I must entrust to God and others. Guard me from promising more than I can give, and from withholding help merely because it would cost me time. When I pray for a person, guide me toward any fitting action I can take. Give me peace as I rest, and prepare me to meet tomorrow’s opportunities with a willing heart.
