A Faith That Can Rest with Questions

As the Day Ends

Some evenings bring questions that do not settle when the day’s work is done. A conversation may have challenged what we believe, or something we read may have raised an objection we cannot yet answer. Paul warns the Colossians against being taken captive by teachings that are “not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8, NIV). He is urging them to stay rooted in the One they have received. In the surrounding verses, Paul tells them to continue living in Christ and to remember that their fullness is found in Him.

A. W. Tozer remembered encountering arguments he could not answer as a young Christian. He brought his distress to God in prayer. His experience reminds us that an unanswered question need not end a relationship with the Lord. We can study carefully, listen fairly, and ask for help without being ashamed of what we do not know. We can also pray while we learn. Paul says that the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children (Romans 8:15–16). That assurance grows within a life turned toward Christ and attentive to His Word. Tonight, you may bring both your trust and your questions to Him.

Father, thank You for welcoming me at the end of this day. You know the questions I have been able to put into words and the uneasiness I have kept to myself. When I feel embarrassed by what I do not understand, help me remember that I can come to You honestly. Give me patience to learn, wisdom to recognize sound teaching, and people with whom I can speak openly. As I rest tonight, remind me that Your care for me does not depend on my ability to answer every question before morning.

Jesus, thank You for meeting people who sought You with questions, fears, and imperfect understanding. Keep my attention on You as I consider what I have heard and read. Where I have accepted a claim too quickly, teach me to examine it. Where I have been afraid to think carefully, give me courage. Help me hold fast to what You have shown through Your life, death, and resurrection. Let my desire for understanding draw me closer to You and make me more gracious toward others who are searching.

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence within the people of God. Quiet the thoughts that keep circling long after I have done all I can for today. Bring Scripture to mind with clarity, and help me distinguish Your guidance from my fears and wishes. If there is something I need to study or a conversation I need to have, guide me when the time comes. For now, help me entrust the unfinished questions to God and receive the rest He gives.

Thought for the Evening: Name one question before God in prayer, then allow yourself to rest while you continue seeking an answer.
