As the Day Ends
“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” — Romans 8:29, NIV. (www.bible.com)
At the end of a day, I can usually recall what I left unfinished. I remember the patient answer I meant to give, the call I did not make, or the moment when worry took more of my attention than prayer. Romans 8:29 invites me to look beyond a single day’s record. God’s purpose is to conform His people to the image of His Son. I can be honest about what needs confession without deciding that today’s failures have ended His work.
That promise also helps me receive the good I may have overlooked. Perhaps I listened when I wanted to interrupt, completed a quiet duty, or returned to prayer after becoming distracted. None of those moments earns God’s love. They may, however, give me reason to thank Him for His patient work. Paul says elsewhere that we “are being transformed into his image” by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18, NIV). Tonight I can rest because I do not have to finish that transformation before morning. I can place both my failures and my growth in the hands of the One who will continue His work. (www.biblegateway.com)
Heavenly Father, thank You for receiving me at the close of this day. I bring You the good I have enjoyed and the things I wish I had handled differently. Where I have sinned, help me confess without making excuses. Where I have tried to carry more than You asked of me, loosen my grip. I am grateful that Your purpose for me reaches beyond what I could accomplish today. Help me trust Your care as I rest.
Jesus the Son, I look to You as the One whose likeness the Father is forming in me. Thank You for meeting me with mercy when I fall short. Bring to mind any person to whom I owe an apology, and give me the courage to offer it when the time comes. For now, quiet the urge to rehearse every conversation. Teach me to receive Your forgiveness and to sleep in peace.
Holy Spirit, continue Your gentle work in me, even when change feels slow. Thank You for the moments today when You helped me choose patience or truth. Show me what I can learn from the moments when I did not. Guard my thoughts as the evening grows still. Prepare me to wake with a willing heart, ready for the next faithful step You place before me.
Thought for the Evening: Name one failure to confess and one gift to thank God for. Then let the day end, trusting Him with the work that remains.
